Abengane (アベンガネ, Abengane) is a Nen Exorcist and a former player of the game Greed Island, hired by Battera at the same time as Gon and Killua.[2]
Appearance[]
Abengane is a tall, lean man. He has dark skin and black hair. His clothing consists of a dark blue, long sleeve shirt with light blue lines across it, and dark blue pants with light blue cuffs.
When trying to conceal his appearance, Abengane dons a beige cloak with a yellow poncho over it, covering everything but the bottom of his legs and his eyes.
Personality[]
Abengane is very taciturn and reflective, concealing his emotions and never losing his cool, even if his life is in danger. He is also logical and quite intelligent, as demonstrated by his ability to think quickly and from his conversations with other players. While not necessarily greedy, he is often concerned about money and gain.
Plot[]
Greed Island arc[]
On September 10th in the Southernpiece Auction House, Abengane is one of the potential applicants in Tsezguerra's trial to have a chance to play Greed Island[3] He manages to pass the test along with 20 other applicants. At 5 p.m. he enters the game via a game console in Battera's mansion.[2] Sometime after entering the game, Abengane makes it to Antokiba and observes a billboard that details the events occurring that month.[4] Abengane is contacted by someone in Nickes' Alliance and waits with Puhat, Biscuit, and alliance members Genthru, Assam, Nomdieu, and Isaac for Nickes to arrive with Gon and Killua. The group is informed by Nickes and Killua that there was another Bomber incident involving a player that recently joined the game as well.[5]
Genthru then begins by explaining to the group that the incident was due to Nen, not a spell card, and he gives details about the various types of cards used within the game. Assam explains that there are three ways to obtain cards within the game, and Gon, Abengane, and Killua each respectively answer: find, trade, and steal. Assam continues his explanation about the difficulty of acquiring certain cards and the limit each card can be copied. Nickes proclaims to the potential new recruits that he desires to put an end to all of that and that he needs their help. Puhat slyly deduces how the alliance gets a majority of their cards, and Nickes reluctantly confirms that they steal them. Abengane claims that while one can use all three ways to obtain cards, the third is the most crucial. Puhat jumps to the conclusion that the alliance uses violence like everyone else, but Nickes denounces the claim.[5]
Puhat then asks they steal the cards, and while Nickes tries to explain, Abengane interrupts him and says that they use spell cards to steal other people's cards. Puhat asks if Abengane has played the game before, but Abengane claims that he hasn't and that he simply used logic to figure it out. Nickes confirms Abengane's statement and explains the alliance's plans to get a monopoly on spell cards. Abengane clarifies that the alliance desires to get a monopoly so that other players can't defend their specified slot cards. Nickes confirms this and goes on to explain more about the alliance and their plans in further detail, again asking the new players for their help.[5] Puhat then inquires about the payout, and Nomdieu explains that everyone in the alliance was hired by Battera as well. Nickes tells them that the 50 billion payout will be equally divided amongst all of the alliance members, with 20 billion being split among the ten founders and everyone else receiving around 200 million each.[6]
Nickes also informs the potential new recruits that they should be able to complete the game within three months, intriguing Abengane. After Genthru mentions that they can undo certain spells placed upon them, Puhat agrees to join. Abengane joins as well after finding out that if he acquires an SS-rank card, he will get a bigger share of 500 million. Later on the outskirts of Greed Island near Antokiba, Abengane and Puhat hand over the cards in their free slots to Nickes so they don't lose them. Jispa arrives and after an explanation on how he got there, he uses a "Leave" to send them out of the game.[6] After reentering the game, Abengane along with the other new alliance members wait at the Shiso Tree until Jispa arrives and uses an "Accompany" to send them to someone named Kosofftro.[7]
Kosofftro welcomes the new recruits and introduces himself. He also details that they need to remember his name in order to return to the base. Abengane recognizes how careful the alliance is to take measures in order to keep the location of their base a secret. While leading the group to the base, Jispa informs the group that their first job will be buying packs of cards sold in Masadora. Abengane mentions that it's like a trading card game, and Jispa confirms the notion. He goes on to explain that they need all 40 spell cards in order to trade them in so they can receive the SS-rank "Angel's Breath", a card so rare that no player has yet to obtain it. Abengane asks how Jispa knows that, and he replies that he used a "List" and details its use. He then explains that the alliance has managed to collect all of the spell cards necessary to obtain the "Angel's Breath" card, amazing the new recruits. He goes on to explain that all they need is an extra "Fortress" to protect it. The members then arrive at the base and are immediately instructed to memorize a list of all of the spell cards and their functions within an hour.[7]
Abengane and Puhat both claim to have memorized the list, so an alliance member quizzes the two and has them whisper the answer in his ear. Abengane gets the right answer on his first try, and while Puhat boasts that he can take a tougher question, he instantly regrets it and gets his answer wrong much to his chagrin and Abengane's amusement.[7] As soon as the alliance comes close to completing the game, all of the alliance members gather in the base to celebrate their success. Genthru makes an announcement where he reveals that he is the Bomber and has placed bombs on all of the alliance members. Hearing this, Jispa tries to stop Genthru, but his face is destroyed by Genthru's Little Flower Nen ability. After dealing with Jispa, he calmly explains that he will reveal how to disarm the bombs.[8] Genthru explains how he activated his Countdown ability on everyone, making Abengane and Puhat remember when Genthru touched them and placed a bomb.[9]
After Genthru activates all of the bombs, Abengane claims that he activated them that specific day because all of the alliance members were all gathered together. Genthru proposes in exchange for their lives if they concede all of their spell cards and 90 specified slot cards to him. Genthru then uses a "Leave" card to flee from the hideout, leaving the alliance members in a panic. A senior member tries to calm the group down, but to no avail. Abengane then explains that Genthru is talented for being able to conjure more than 60 fatal bombs, how he's well versed in Emission, Manipulation, and Conjuration, and that it would be futile to retaliate against him when he's not only quick on his feet but also wields his Little Flower ability. As Assam curses Genthru, Abengane deduces that Genthru has had this plan for five or more years. Mikli then notices that all of the counters are going down at different rates, and Abengane believes that the countdown is linked to their heart rates, saying that it initially starts at 6,000 until it reaches zero. One of the alliance members tries to argue the use of knowing that now, but Abengane tells him to stay calm. He tells the alliance that they need to stay united and asks if they should fight Genthru or hand over their cards to him.[9]
After Killua leaves Greed Island to retake the Hunter Exam, Abengane uses a "Magnetic Force" to travel to Gon and Biscuit. The latter is concerned about Abengane after seeing something attached to his shoulder, and he answers that the Bomber got him, adding that he will explain everything.[10] Abengane tells Gon and Biscuit everything that occurred in the alliance base and who the Bomber is. The three try to work out a plan for how to confront Genthru, but come up with nothing. Running out of time, Abengane leaves and claims that he contacted them because he thought the two of them were the most promising of those he had met. He finally begs the two to warn others about the Bomber and also to avenge him and the alliance members. After using a "Return" to travel back to Bunzen, he confesses that Gon and Biscuit were the only ones he came in contact with, but claims that flattery does wonders. In a nearby forest, Abengane uses his Exorcism ability that conjures a long and large snake-like creature that eats the bomb off his body. The creature then wraps itself around Abengane and to conceal himself and the creature, Abengane puts on a large cloak that covers most of his body.[11]
Abengane's name is mentioned in Gon's binder.[12] Thanks to Kalluto's ability, the Phantom Troupe locate Abengane and have Hisoka negotiate a deal with him to exorcise the chain around Chrollo's heart.[13] During Eta's Greed Island Quiz, Abengane approaches Genthru, touches him on the shoulder, and utters the necessary phrase ("I caught the Bomber") to dispel Genthru's lingering Nen, leaving Genthru perplexed. After Gon, Killua, and Biscuit leave for Limeiro, Abengane praises them but thinks that they are still weaker than Genthru, saying that they must have had a flawless plan. After using a "Magnetic Force" and saying that the group can have the prize money for clearing the game, he takes off the large cloak and meets up with Hisoka, planning to return to the real world to make a fortune on the exorcism.[14]
Chimera Ant arc[]
Having left the game, Abengane and Hisoka are seen approaching Chrollo as he reads an issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump.[15]
Succession Contest arc[]
Abengane has seemingly removed Kurapika's chain from Chrollo's heart.[16]
Abilities & Powers[]
Abengane is extremely perceptive. He was able to figure out the general principles of the tactics used by Nickes' group mere minutes after stepping into Greed Island. His deductions on how cards work prompted Puhat to ask him if he had ever played the game before.[5] He also realized that the countdown of the bombs set by Genthru was linked to the victim's heart rate. Despite having one of them on his own body, he did not show the slightest hint of agitation,[9] although it could be due to him knowing that he could remove the bomb using his own ability. That same reason may or may not be at the heart of his claim of being less proficient than Jispa in combat.[11]
Abengane also has an excellent memory, which allowed him to memorize the names, numbers, typologies, and effects of all offensive and defensive spell cards within minutes of reading them.[7]
Preternatural Perception: Abengane was able to sense that Gon and Killua had improved considerably after training under Biscuit. He also had a clear enough grasp of their power level to deem them weaker to Genthru overall.[14]
Nen[]
Abengane is a Conjurer,[1] and he is extremely skilled in his natural category.[11] His ability allows him to remove the effects of Nen from himself or others, thus qualifying as an Exorcist. According to Phinks, this type of ability is a rarity.[17] He is not one of the very best, however, since he cannot lift curses left by a deceased Nen user.[11] He is knowledgeable enough in Nen to be able to identify the categories used in Genthru's Countdown.[9]
Abegane's Nen Type: Conjuration | ||
---|---|---|
Type: Conjuration | Exorcism* | |
Abengane's ability requires him to first burn a campfire. He takes a wooden effigy and chants a prayer[note 1] to forest spirits. He takes a branch of leaves, weaves a netted decoration around the doll, and burns it in the fire. The campfire rages, amassing the aura of the flora and fauna of the forest alongside Abengane's own to conjure a Nen beast. The appearance and size of the construct depend upon the power of the curse to exorcise. The Nen beast is able to exorcise Nen curses by devouring them, though it will linger until the originator of the ability has died or Abengane satisfies the conditions to disarm the curse. However, Abengane is unable to lift Nen abilities left by the dead.[11] Aside from Conjuration, the ability may also make use of Manipulation. |

Trivia[]
- Abengane's Nen proficiency is at the highest rank: Extreme.[1]
- It is possible that the cloak and poncho are conjured as well, since both are nowhere around his person before the exorcism and he produces them out of nowhere.

Notes
- ↑ The prayer that Abengane chants in Chapter 147 (page 5, panel 1) is: "Migamurra saminga dura intera minga zenberra lubra" (ミガームラサミンガードゥラインテラミンガゼンベラルブラ, Migāmura samingā dura intera minga zenbera rubura); it is not known if, just as the Nen beast's physical aspects, the words that he uses in prayer vary according to each exorcism case.
