Face-Off: Part 4 ((たい)(けつ)()()()()()()()()④, Taiketsu (Yon)) is the 161st chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis[]

As Bopobo's body lies on the floor, the new recruits are terrified that the pirates are killing one another. They start to walk out, but Goreinu assures them that they won't have to fight at all, with Tsezguerra adding that they can quit if the main nine aren't able to get the eight wins. As he tells them aloud that they will be safe, he says to himself that weak players like them don't deserve to be in the game and act like they're Double-Star Hunters. He turns his attention to Razor, who he says has more aura than anyone present, confident that he must be one of the Game Masters.

Killua speaks up and asks what will happen to the sumo match with Bopobo dead, and Razor says that Killua gets the win. Killua playfully replies that they hadn't decided who would compete in the sumo match, and Razor says that he can just give the win to one of the filler players. After Killua gifts the win to one of them and the group reaches four points, the pirates carry away Bopobo's body as Gon nervously watches them.

Chap 161 - Razor summoning his team of Nen beasts

Razor summoning his team of Nen beasts

Razor gets their attention and tells them that his sport of choice, dodgeball, requires eight people. He suddenly summons seven Nen beasts and says that he already has his team. Goreinu and Barry wonder how the points will be decided, and Razor replies that whoever wins will gain eight points (one for each team member). Tsezguerra realizes Razor's strategy and remembers the story about his "14 devils," understanding that it must be his ability. As the new recruits again express their fear and consider leaving, Rodriot and the others tell them that they can just get hit on purpose, but the weak players point out what happened to Bopobo. Razor clarifies that they will just be using a regular ball, but since Nen is allowed, it will make it equally destructive.

Some of the new recruits run away in fear as Killua unsuccessfully tries to convince them to come back. Tsezguerra says that since they only have six now, they will need to recruit two weaklings no matter what. As he tries to think of a way to bring two of them back, Gon says that they can fight Razor by themselves, asking him if using only six players is allowed. Razor says that it isn't since it would defeat the point of bringing together a group of 15 people. Gon becomes angry and points out that Razor is by himself, wondering if he should even be arguing with an NPC. He furiously asks if Bopobo was his friend and what he could have done to deserve being killed. Razor calmly answers that he committed robbery, rape, and murder (11 known cases at least).

Hisoka speaks up and says that the game is taking place in reality, leaving Gon confused. Tsezguerra confirms that Greed Island is an actual place in the real world, explaining that it's a taboo to tell players that they're not in a game and that Bopobo was killed for breaking it. He says that Razor is not only a real person, but a game master as well, adding that Bopobo and the other pirates are death row convicts, who are sometimes hired by Hunters as long as they are absolutely obedient. He explains that since Bopobo not only refused Razor's orders, but tried to convince his comrades to do the same, his execution was necessary because Razor would have been punished if he had let Bopobo's actions slide.

Chap 161 - Razor learning that Gon is Ging's son

Razor learning that Gon is Ging's son

Gon continues to grapple with the fact that the game is taking place in reality, and both Killua and Biscuit never considered it either. Razor bounces the ball on the floor to get their attention and says that it doesn't make much difference, but Gon eagerly asks if Ging is on the island. Goreinu wonders who he's talking about, but the name immediately gets Razor's attention. As he guesses that Gon must be Ging's son, his aura suddenly spikes around him and, putting on an ominous smile, he says that Ging told him not to go easy on him when he arrived. Gon is frightened at first, but becomes excited and puts on an anxious smile.

The rest of the new recruits run away in fear, and as Rodriot tries to convince them to stay, Goreinu tells him to let them leave, suddenly summoning two gorilla-like Nen beasts and confirming with Razor that it's allowed. The two teams are decided, and Razor begins to explain the rules:

  • The game starts with seven players inside the court and one retriever outside, and a team loses when none are left inside the court.
  • When a player inside the court is hit with the ball, they are out and move to outside the court to become a retriever.
  • Including the player who starts outside the court, one player per team can come back inside. They have to say "Back" to do this and it can be used at any time. If a team uses this at the beginning of a match, all eight of their players can start inside the court.
  • If one team has no retrievers and the ball rolls out, the other team gains possession.
  • The cushion rule is in effect and means that any ricochets are still live as long as the ball hasn't touched the floor. According to this rule, if a ball thrown by team A hits one player from team B, bounces off them, and then hits another player from team B before touching the floor, both players from team B are out. If the second player catches the ball, both players are safe. On the other hand, if a ball thrown by team A hits one player from team B, bounces off them, hits a player from team A, and then touches the floor, only the player from team A will be out. If the player from team A catches the rebound, the player from team B is out.

Gon is left slightly confused, and Killua just tells him to dodge or catch the ball. Razor asks if they have any questions, and Killua wonders if retrievers can take out other players. Razor says that they can, but reminds him that only one per team can come back inside the court. An eighth Nen beast of Razor's, Number 0, introduces itself as the referee and begins the match. Number 1 starts as the retriever for Razor's side, and Goreinu's white Nen beast for Gon's. The referee tosses the ball up at the center of the court, and Killua easily wins the exchange, hitting the ball back to Goreinu. Standing ready with his Nen beasts, Razor says that they can have the first shot, with Goreinu confidently winding up for a throw.
