Resolution ((けっ)(ちゃく)()()()()()()()(), Ketchaku) is the 21st chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis[]

After winning the game of rock-paper-scissors, Leroute celebrates her victory over Leorio, who is visibly upset by the loss. While Tonpa notes that the score is now tied at two each, Kurapika focuses more on the fact that they have 50 fewer hours to reach the bottom of Trick Tower alive. Leroute asks Lippo how much time the examinees had left, and he answers 59 hours and 45 minutes. Bendot notes that they now have less than 10 hours, but the last prisoner to fight says that it's pointless since his opponent will die and the examinees will fail.

Chap 21 - Leorio recognizing Johness

Leorio recognizing Johness

Leorio apologizes to the group and says that he thought he was decent at gambling. Tonpa asks him why he thought that, and Leorio shrugs off the comment, replying that it doesn't matter now. Killua prepares to fight the last prisoner, causing Leorio to criticize himself even more since he believes the team is now doomed. Killua angrily tells him that they should see the prisoner first and that he can hold his own as long as it doesn't involve math. The prisoner's handcuffs fall to the floor, and once he removes the shroud from his head, Leorio immediately recognizes him and nervously tells Killua not to fight him, not caring if the team loses now.

It's then stated that the prisoner is known as Johness the Dissector, the most infamous mass murderer in Zaban City's history whose 146 victims had no significant connections or common traits to create a pattern or motive. It's revealed that some of the victims' bodies were so dismembered that all the pieces couldn't be cleared from the scene, with an 11-year-old boy having been gutted alive. Every victim was torn apart in at least 50 pieces, and Johness committed the murders by using only his bare hands. In a flashback, although Johness is finally arrested and surrenders peacefully, one of the police officers goes to start his car and suddenly has a piece of his left arm ripped off. With the officer screaming in pain, Johness sits handcuffed in the backseat while holding the piece of flesh in his hand. It's finally stated that Johness' M.O. was to quickly pluck his victims' flesh from their bones with his incredibly strong fingers.

Chap 21 - Killua holding Johness' heart

Killua holding Johness' heart

Back in the present, Johness grabs a part of the wall and rips it off with his hand, crushing it into small pieces and saying that he has missed the feel of flesh. Leorio again warns Killua not to fight Johness and that they can try to pass the Hunter Exam next year. However, Killua walks away without a word and meets Johness on the platform, asking him how he wants to fight. It's stated that Johness' sentence totals 968 years for mass murder, and he reveals that he doesn't care about the exam or reducing his sentence, only intent on tearing Killua to pieces and feeling the flesh in his hands as he hears his screams. Killua calmly agrees that the loser will die, but before Johness can even finish his reply, Killua walks past him and appears to take something from him. As a bloody spot appears on Johness' shirt, Killua is seen holding his still beating heart in his hand. Johness anxiously asks him to give it back, but Killua coldly smiles and crushes it, causing Johness to drop dead before he can reach it.

With everyone left stunned, Killua confirms that they have won the contest, but Bendot reminds him that they have to spend 50 hours waiting in a small room nearby before they can continue the Third Phase. Killua remembers that Bendot didn't have to fight Tonpa and asks if he wants to fight now, but Bendot politely declines, leaving Killua with a smile on his face. As Leorio and Kurapika wonder who Killua really is, Gon reveals that he's from a family of assassins. The five examinees eventually make their way past the prisoners and arrive at the aforementioned room.

Lippo tells them that they will be allowed to leave in 50 hours, and the five spend their time drinking, reading, and relaxing. As Killua begins to read a book, Kurapika asks him how he pulled off the trick against Johness. However, Killua explains that it wasn't a trick and that he simply removed his heart, suddenly revealing that he can adjust his hand to sharpen his nails. With Gon and Leorio taken aback by the feat, Killua says that he used to be a professional murderer while Johness was only an amateur, adding that his father can do the same without leaving any blood on the wound. Gon is left curious about Killua's cat-like claws, and Kurapika is relieved that Killua is on their side. Once the 50 hours have elapsed and the group quickly leaves the room, Leorio checks the timer to see that they have nine hours and 43 minutes remaining. As they turn the corner, they find two staircases—one going up, the other going down—and again have to make a choice by voting.
