Light and Darkness: Part 2 ((ひかり)()()()()()()()()()(やみ)()()()()()()()()()②, Hikari to Yami (Ni)) is the 36th chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis[]

In a flashback, as Illumi reveals his true appearance and greets Killua, Leorio wonders if he's Killua's brother. Illumi says that he heard Killua stabbed their mother and Milluki, and Killua confirms it. As Illumi says that their mother was in tears, Leorio isn't surprised and can't believe that Killua would stab his own mother. However, Illumi clarifies that they were tears of joy because of Killua's skill, causing Leorio to fall over in shock. Illumi then tells Killua that their mother is still concerned about him being by himself and asked him to check on his younger brother. He adds that he was surprised to find him taking the Hunter Exam, revealing that he is doing so to get a Hunter License for an upcoming job. Killua nervously replies that he doesn't really want to become a Hunter and that he was only curious about the tests. Illumi bluntly tells him that he wouldn't make a good Hunter and that he is meant to be an assassin.

Back in the present, Gon is left surprised by Illumi's words and can't believe the kind of family Killua has. Satotz tells Gon that much more happened, and in the flashback, Illumi tells Killua that there's no fire inside him, only darkness, adding that his only fleeting joy should be to cause death. With Killua nervously sweating, Illumi adds that he and their father molded him that way and that he has no reason to continue now that his curiosity has been satisfied. Killua replies that while he doesn't want to become a Hunter, there are other things he wants. Illumi tells him that there aren't, but Killua angrily replies that there are, including one more than anything, with Illumi asking what it is. After being urged by Illumi to answer, Killua says that he wants to be friends with Gon, revealing that he's tired of killing and just wants to be a normal kid so he can spend time with him.

Illumi tells Killua that it won't happen since he is incapable of friendship and only sees people as targets, just as he was taught to do. He adds that Gon is simply a novelty that piqued his interest, but even though Killua denies it, Illumi stresses that Killua will eventually kill Gon if he becomes friends with him since he is a murderer by nature. Leorio slowly walks closer toward the two, but Masta moves in front of him and reminds him that he has already been warned. Leorio says that he isn't interfering and yells out to Killua that he should simply beat his jerk of a brother and pass. He also assures Killua that he and Gon are already friends, at least according to Gon, and Illumi is taken aback by Leorio's words, deciding that he now has to kill Gon.

Chap 36 - Illumi using his needles on an official

Illumi using his needles on an official

With Leorio, Kurapika, and Killua left shocked, Illumi readies his needles and repeats that assassins have no use for friends since they only get in the way. As Illumi wonders where Gon is and begins to walk away from the match, an official approaches him and points out that the match is still in progress, but Illumi quickly throws three needles into his forehead, causing his face to become disfigured. Illumi asks him where Gon is, and the official replies that he's through the next door before falling to his knees and gasping for breath. Leorio, Kurapika, Hanzo, and several officials move in front of the door, and Illumi remembers how important obtaining a license is, also worrying about Killua passing if he fails. He also considers the fact that he will fail if he kills Gon and realizes that he only needs to pass first before killing him, leaving Killua petrified by the idea.

Illumi asks if his license would be revoked if he killed everyone in the room, and Netero confirms that there's no rule against it. Illumi asks Killua what he thinks and points out that the only way for him to save Gon is to defeat him, guessing that he's not thinking about Gon at all and only considering whether he can win. He assures Killua that he has no chance against him and reminds him of the lesson to never fight a superior opponent, holding out his hand and moving closer toward him. Killua takes one step backwards, but Illumi tells him not to move, warning him that the match will start when either he makes another move or Illumi's fingers touch him, and stressing that his only option of admitting defeat will result in Gon's death.

With Killua left terrified, Leorio yells out and assures him that he doesn't need to worry about Gon, promising that they will keep Illumi from reaching him. Killua finally admits defeat with Illumi's hand inches away from his head, and Illumi claps with excitement, glad that the two of them don't have to fight and revealing that he was only kidding about Gon. He promises not to touch his friend and adds that it was only a test, which proved that he isn't qualified to make friends. He reminds Killua that he will keep doing the job that he and their father have trained him to do, adding that while he doesn't need a Hunter License now, he may need one someday. Back in the present, Satotz explains that something changed in Killua and that he didn't even respond to Leorio and Kurapika. He then reveals to Gon that at the start of the match between Bodoro and Leorio, Killua suddenly walked out and killed the former from behind by putting his hand into his chest, with the committee obviously failing him afterwards. After hearing what happened during the final phase, Gon makes his way to the lecture hall and slams open the door, spotting Illumi and scowling at him.
