The Heavens Arena ((てん)(くう)(とう)()(じょう)()()()()(), Tenkū Tōgijō) is the 44th chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis[]

Now in a small town with Kukuroo Mountain in the distance, Kurapika shows Gotoh's final coin trick to the others, catching the tossed coin and asking Gon to choose the correct hand. Gon answers with the left, but Kurapika reveals that it's in his right hand, leaving Gon dumbfounded again. Kurapika explains that he used two coins, palming one and then flipping the other before obviously catching it with his left. He adds that it takes practice and that one needs to hold their fists above the viewer's eye level, letting the left coin fall down into their sleeve undetected.

Chap 44 - Gon eager to punch Hisoka and return his badge

Gon eager to punch Hisoka and return his badge

After Gon finally understands how it works, Killua explains that while Gotoh knows a lot of tricks, he hates cheating. He then leans in toward Gon and angrily asks him why he is so stubborn. With Gon confused, Killua reminds him that he has a license after passing the Hunter Exam and that he can go nearly anywhere he wants without a tourist visa. Leorio points that they told him already, and Gon says that he has things he wants to do before he uses it. He first tells them that he wants to find Kite and return the license he dropped. Rummaging through his backpack, he then pulls out Hisoka's badge and says that he wants to punch him in the face and make him take it back, unable to feel like he earned his license until then.

Killua asks him if he knows where to find Hisoka, but Gon's silence tells them that he has no idea. However, Kurapika reveals that Hisoka told him after the lecture. Leorio points out that he also said something during their fight, reminding Kurapika that they are all friends and allies even though it's his own business. Kurapika then reveals that during their fight, Hisoka said he knew something interesting about the Spiders. He explains that he never mentioned the Phantom Troupe to him, guessing that he heard it from them during the first phase or heard it from someone who had overheard them. He continues by saying that the Troupe is often referred to as the Spiders because it's their symbol and that Hisoka's knowledge of this piqued his interest. Leorio replies aloud that it makes sense, while internally he says that it was the reason why Kurapika put aside his pride and took the free win. Kurapika then reveals that he asked him about it after the lecture, and Hisoka replied that he would tell him in Yorknew City on September 1st.

The four agreeing to meet in Yorknew City

Gon points out that it's more than six months away, and Killua wonders what's happening in the city then. Leorio then realizes that it's when the largest auction in the world takes place, and Kurapika explains that during those ten days, numerous rare objects (including counterfeits and forgeries) will be bought by people with enormous amounts of wealth. Leorio asks if the Troupe will be there, and while Kurapika isn't sure, he says that there will at least be people there who know of them, including Hisoka. He promises to find Hisoka and call Gon, who happily thanks him. Kurapika then tells them that it's time for him to leave since reuniting with Killua was the last thing he needed to do before making use of his license, explaining that he will use it to earn money so that he can attend the auction. Leorio says that he is also leaving, reminding Gon about his dream and that his license will cover his tuition to a public medical school (as long as he can qualify). After Gon tells him to study hard, the four agree to meet again on September 1 in Yorknew City.

After Gon and Killua say goodbye to Kurapika and Leorio at the airport, watching their airship fly off into the distance, Gon is left unsure what they should do next. Killua suggests training and sharply deduces that it would take him ten years to even get close to Hisoka's skill level, reminding him that they only have six months. He picks up a stick to draw Hisoka and Hanzo's faces in the ground, showing how far apart the two are in terms of ability. He then moves incredibly far away to show the skill gap between them and Gon on his best day. Telling himself that he should feel insulted, Gon asks Killua where he would place himself, surprised to see that Hanzo is stronger. He then calls Killua amazing, but Killua tells him not to say it so seriously since it's embarrassing. Gon asks how he compares people's strengths so easily, and Killua stresses that it's just an approximation, assuring him that it becomes easier with experience. However, he tells Gon not to rely on it too much since stronger opponents are better at hiding their strength.

Chap 44 - Heavens Arena

Gon and Killua making their way to Heavens Arena

Killua again tells Gon that he won't be able to beat Hisoka with only six months of training, asking him how much money he has. Gon says that he is running low, and Killua reveals that they can train and make money at a place called Heavens Arena. As they travel by airship to the enormous tower, Killua says that it's the fourth tallest building in the world (3,250 feet) and on the same continent, also using the map to point out Yorknew to the south of them. He adds that they will need to earn a living since the airfare has left them with no money, asking Gon if he's ready for their new beginning. After Gon energetically says yes, the two walk out and stand in the long line of combatants waiting to compete. Killua assures him that there aren't any rules to worry about, revealing that the only objective is to knock the opponent out and that they will make more money the higher they go.

Once they reach the front of the line, a woman welcomes them and hands them each a form to fill out, with Killua whispering to Gon that he should write ten years of combat experience to increase his initial ranking. The two then enter a large arena filled with sixteen small fighting platforms. Gon is left in disbelief, and Killua happily takes in the scene, saying that it hasn't changed at all. Gon asks if he has been there before, and Killua explains that his father left him there with no money when he was six and said he had to stay until he made it to the 200th floor (which took him two years). With Gon thinking about what he went through, Killua then explains that fighters as skilled as Hisoka are found much higher up the tower.

Chap 44 - Gon easily defeating his first opponent

Gon easily defeating his first opponent

Gon's number is suddenly called, causing him to feel nervous, but Killua reminds him that he opened the Testing Gate, whispering in his ear what he should do. Gon walks out to meet his opponent, an enormous man who dwarfs him in size. The audience members talk among themselves and yell out jeers toward Gon, telling him to run away and supporting his opponent. The referee explains that their conditioning will be evaluated and tells them that they have three minutes to show their skill level. After the referee gives the signal to begin, the large man immediately charges forward and promises to make it quick. However, Gon dodges his initial punch and follows Killua's advice, simply pushing him in the midsection. Reeling from the attack, the man is sent flying back and crashes into the stands. The audience is left stunned, and Gon is surprised that he has become so strong. The referee tells him to advance to the 50th floor, and Killua then wins his match as well, with the judge noting his veteran status and telling him to start on the 180th floor. However, Killua says that he will start on the 50th since he wants to take it easy at first. As the audience cheers for another fighter, Killua looks over to see a young boy who has defeated another large man, with the referee telling him to start on the 50th floor.
