The Battle Begins!! ((せん)(とう)(かい)()()()()()()()!!, Sentō Kaishi!!) is the 49th chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis[]

The three fighters also recognize that Gon and Killua can use Ten, but the two quickly make their way to the registration desk, where a female clerk welcomes them to the 200th floor. She hands them the registration form to sign and then asks if they would like a match, explaining that they have 90 days to do so. She adds that they can fight every day or wait until the last minute, but stresses that at least one match is necessary to earn another 90 days of preparation since their registration for the floor will be revoked if they decline to fight during that time.

Chap 49 - The clerk excited to reveal the Battle Olympia tournament

The clerk excited to reveal the Battle Olympia tournament

Gon realizes that they will be fighting multiple matches there, and she confirms that ten victories are needed to win the division, adding that four losses before ten wins will result in disqualification. She then reveals that if they do reach ten wins, they will be able to challenge a Floor Master, explaining that these 21 fighters are the highest ranked and each control an entire floor between 230 and 250. She also reveals that if they defeat a Floor Master, they will gain control of the floor and take over the title. The two wonder if that's everything, but she excitedly adds that if they become a Floor Master, they will be eligible to advance to the top floor and participate in the Battle Olympia tournament that happens every other year.

The two boys are left unimpressed, and Killua asks if that's all the top floor has to offer, causing the clerk to angrily explain that the champion lives in the most exclusive penthouse in the world (3,280 feet in the air) and that there are many valuable prizes. It's pointed out that Killua lives in a house 12,000 feet above sea level, and he again expresses his disappointment to the even angrier clerk. Gon points out that he is only there to fight Hisoka, and the clerk wonders why he is even bothering with it all. Killua asks Gon if he will try to win one match right away, and Gon says that they should at least try so they can see the competition, with the disappointed clerk asking them to fill out the applications.

Chap 49 - Gon allowing the other fighters to choose the dates

Gon allowing the other fighters to choose the dates

The three fighters confront the boys again, and one of them says that they are just there to request a match. Seeing that the application requires one to write in what days work for them, Killua tells Gon that the fighters are trying to see what day he picks. As the three chuckle, Gon checks one of the boxes and hands them the form, telling them to pick any day they want. After they write in their dates, the clerk hands Gon and Killua their room keys, also telling them that they will be kept informed of their fight status.

As they make their way to Gon's room, Killua understands the brutal initiation that the three fighters had to go through. After they walk inside and see how impressive the room is, Killua immediately notices that Gon's match date has been confirmed for March 11 at 3 p.m. on the 225th floor. He tells Gon that he should be ready for tomorrow and suddenly notices him using Ten. Gon smiles and says that although he doesn't expect to win, he wants to get used to Ten so he can see how it feels, with Killua not saying anything in reply.

The following day, the crowd roars as the announcer introduces both fighters, saying that Gon is making his debut above the 200th floor and that Gido currently has four wins and one loss. In a flashback, Wing reminds Gon and Killua that Ten is only a defensive technique and that they must use their own skills for offense. He adds that their Ten will prove inadequate against a more proficient Nen user, ordering them not to accept any matches for their first two months and assuring them that he will teach them everything he can during that time. Back in the present, Gon apologizes and anxiously says that he just has to fight. Watching the match on a television with others around them, Wing wonders what he’s going to do with Gon as Zushi wishes him good luck.

Chap 49 - Gon surrounded by Gido's spinning tops

Gon surrounded by Gido's spinning tops

As soon as the referee begins the match and Gon activates his Ten, Gido spins a top on his finger and tells Gon that he should be glad he is his first opponent since he’s hardly a real danger. However, Gido suddenly brings out nine more tops and spins all ten covered in aura along his cane. As the announcer excitedly points out Gido’s dancing tops, he uses his Battle Waltz to send them spinning all around Gon, bouncing off each other as one strikes him right in the back. Gon realizes what happened, and the referee declares a clean hit. Gido explains that his tops will spin for hours and that even he doesn’t know what they will do. Still reeling from the attack, Gon tells himself that Gido downplayed his strength since it felt like he was hit by a sledgehammer.
