Synopsis[]

Chap 50 - Gon unable to avoid Gido's spinning tops

Gon unable to avoid Gido's spinning tops

As Gido's tops continue to spin all around Gon, another one suddenly strikes him in the back as the announcer points out that Gon is facing his first real test at Heavens Arena. Gon watches the tops colliding with each other, and another strikes him in the face, sending him to the ground as the referee declares a clean hit and a knockdown. With the announcer noting that Gido already has four points, the referee asks Gon if he can continue. Gon quickly rises to his feet and confirms that he can, wondering what he should do when he can't track the tops' movement.

Still watching the match, Zushi asks if Gido is using Nen, and Wing confirms that he is using a form of Hatsu to infuse his tops with aura. He explains that Nen can strengthen the function of an object and likens aura to gas or batteries, adding that more aura is needed for a bigger object and that Gido can keep the small tops spinning for hours. He then surmises that Gido gave the tops even more Nen to work as a command, explaining that someone's emotional attachment to an object improves its response.

Chap 50 - Gon starting to understand how the tops work

Gon starting to understand how the tops work

Gon continues to struggle tracking the tops and tells himself that since they are charged with Nen, he needs to sense their movement. He closes his eyes and begins to feel it, but realizes that his Ten is fading as another top strikes him in the back. The announcer declares that Gido now has six points and comments on Gon bouncing outside the ring. As Gon realizes that he can't focus on sensing the tops without neglecting his Ten, he notices one spinning outside the ring and not attacking him. The referee asks if he can continue, but Gon tells him to be quiet so he can think. The referee angrily replies that he will lose if he doesn't return to the ring in ten seconds.

As the referee begins the count, Gon says to himself that he doesn't sense any sinister Nen from the top. He wonders about the others and sees that they are moving around randomly as they strike one another now and again. Gon realizes that they may not be coming after him and asks the referee why he's standing outside the ring. The referee replies that he would get hit if he were up there, and Gon realizes that it's exactly like the sumo tops game. Wing explains to Zushi that a Nen user can't give a complex command to something that's not a machine or animal, guessing that Gido ordered the tops to deflect any obstacles. He adds that since the tops can't identify obstacles, they just spin around the ring and strike anything they encounter.

Gido knocking Gon back with his Tornado Top

Realizing that he can just ignore the tops, Gon jumps back inside the ring before the count ends and charges toward Gido. However, as Gon attempts to land a kick, Gido explains that even though he realized the trick, he won't be able to attack him directly, suddenly spinning his entire body and sending Gon flying out of the ring with his Tornado Top ability. The announcer describes it as Gido's vicious technique that uses offense and defense, with the referee declaring a critical hit and a knockdown. The announcer then declares that Gon is in trouble now that Gido has nine points.

Gido chuckles and says that he has never lost since being initiated on the 200th floor and getting his current body. He explains that he protects himself with his Tornado Top ability while letting his tops handle the offense, allowing him to slowly score points during the match. Killua yells out to Gon and tells him not to attack since Gido will get dizzy soon. A nearby spectator laughs and describes his advice as amateur, but when he attempts to explain that people like figure skaters can overcome it through training, Killua sends him back with a punch and wonders who he even is.

Chap 50 - Gon using Zetsu so that he can focus on the tops' movement

Gon using Zetsu so that he can focus on the tops' movement

Still reeling from the attack, Gon wonders what he can do with his current skills. Wing tells Zushi that Gon could either keep attacking until Gido runs out of Ten or try to overpower his defensive aura. However, he explains that Gon hasn't learned Ren yet and doesn't know how to generate aura either, guessing that he's fighting Gido five years too early. Gritting his teeth, Gon wonders how he can keep fighting and realizes that the match will end if he gives up one more point. Gido, Killua, and Zushi are all stunned when Gon suddenly stops using Ten and closes his eyes.

Wing then realizes that Gon not only stopped using Ten but is somehow using Zetsu, which has closed all his nodes and left him defenseless against Nen. Wing points out that he hasn't taught it to Gon, realizing that he must have picked it up on his own like an animal learning to hunt prey. He wonders if that's what his childhood has been like, understanding how he has so much potential but left asking himself why Gon would use Zetsu now. As Killua yells out to Gon and reminds him he will be in great danger without any Nen, Gon tells himself that he needs to focus all his senses to feel the tops' movement and that using Ten would distract him. Wing then realizes that Gon never planned to win the match and is risking his own life in order to practice.

Chap 50 - Gon successfully evading the tops

Gon successfully evading the tops

As the tops bounce all around him and Gido laughingly says that he will get his death wish, Gon continues to concentrate and suddenly dodges one of the tops that would have struck him in the head. With Gido left stunned, the announcer excitedly asks if Gon will begin to make a comeback. Gon continues to sense where the tops are going and reminds himself to give everything he has to avoid them so that he can keep fighting. Watching at the back of the arena, Hisoka is seen smirking as he eagerly clenches his right fist.
