Double (ダブル, Daburu) is the 53rd chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis[]

As the crowd roars and Hisoka recovers from the strike, Kastro explains that he has changed in the past two years ago and won't go as easy on him with the next attack. The announcer declares that Kastro has gained the first point, and Killua is left wondering if Kastro's attack was an optical illusion. After Hisoka stands up and replies that he will decide when he gets serious, Kastro tells him to decide quickly before leaping toward him once again. He swipes at Hisoka with his left hand, and although Hisoka seems to duck below it easily, he is somehow hit by the attack and left thinking that he dodged it like the previous strike.

Chap 53 - Kastro knocking Hisoka down with a kick

Kastro knocking Hisoka down with a kick

Hisoka refuses to be knocked down and leaps back from Kastro's subsequent barrage of attacks. As the wound on Hisoka's cheek bleeds from the previous strike, he sees Kastro throwing a kick and blocks it with his left arm. However, Kastro somehow appears directly behind him and slams him down with a vicious kick to the head. The referee declares a clean hit and knockdown, with the announcer declaring that Kastro now has four points as she wonders if she imagined what she just saw.

Kastro then asks Hisoka if he won’t change his mind and wonders if he will die without discovering what's happening. The referee asks Hisoka if he can continue, and Hisoka rises to his feet saying that it seemed as though Kastro had vanished. As the announcer agrees, Hisoka clarifies his explanation and guesses that he's overlooking something simple. Kastro tells him that he won't be able to discover the truth if he refuses to face him, threatening to take his arm with the next attack. He then gets into a strange stance, and the crowd immediately recognizes it as his Tiger Bite Fist. Even Killua recognizes the martial art form and says that masters can use it to rip entire trees in half. He points out that Hisoka still hasn't realized what Kastro's ability is, adding that he hasn't either and guessing that Hisoka will end up dead.

Kastro double

Kastro revealing his doppelganger

As Kastro announces his approach and lunges toward him, Hisoka suddenly holds out his left arm and asks him to take it. Kastro wonders whether it's stupidity or a trap, but plans to do so as he moves toward Hisoka's left arm. However, he suddenly moves behind Hisoka and uses his Tiger Bite Fist to sever his right arm instead (below the elbow). The crowd is left stunned, and Kastro tells Hisoka that he will never let him get his way. Hisoka calmly explains that everything is going as expected, leaping away from Kastro's next strike and catching his dismembered arm before it hits the floor. He then chuckles and surmises that Kastro's ability allows him to create a double. With the crowd left confused, Kastro confirms Hisoka's suspicion by revealing an exact copy of himself that leaves the spectators in disbelief.

Killua understands that it wasn't a trick and points out that he thought another Kastro seemed to be superimposed on him. The announcer wonders whether she's seeing double or Kastro has a twin, but Hisoka deduces that it's a doppelganger. After Kastro confirms it, the word's entry in "The Encyclopedia of the Paranormal" is shown, explaining the term in detail and including multiple real-world accounts. Hisoka then says that he watched without evading him and that he was right to use the word "vanished" earlier. He continues to think out his explanation aloud and finally says that there were two of Kastro in the split second before he vanished.

53 - Injured Hisoka

Hisoka showing no fear toward Kastro

Calling Hisoka impressive, Kastro explains that he uses his Nen double to attack first while he hides in its shadows, extinguishing it once he reacts and then attacking. Killua realizes that Kastro's loose clothing creates blind spots and that it's difficult to discover how it all works during combat. Kastro assures Hisoka that the double isn't an illusion and that he felt its strike, warning him that his True Tiger Bite Fist involves facing two of him at once. He declares that he will take Hisoka's other arm next and asks if he will remain stubbornly confident. With a grin on his face and his aura swelling around him, Hisoka begins to chew part of his dismembered arm and guesses that he's more prepared for the challenge, causing Kastro to smile anxiously in reply.
