Making the Grade ((きゅう)(だい)()()()()()()()(), Kyūdai) is the 59th chapter of the Hunter × Hunter manga, written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi.

Synopsis[]

The announcer introduces the main event of Killua versus Riehlvelt, excitedly wondering what sort of fight it will be. Killua tells Riehlvelt that because he broke his promise first, he won't be getting any more free wins. Riehlvelt tells himself that it doesn't matter if Killua is a professional assassin, calmly reminding himself that Heavens Arena is his domain where he will be victorious. Once the referee explains that the winner will be decided by points or knockout and begins the match, Killua immediately leaps into the air and leaves Riehlvelt wondering where he went. Riehlvelt senses that Killua is right behind him and uses his Aura Burst ability to escape in his wheelchair, barely evading Killua's strike.

Chap 59 - Killua easily catching Riehlvelt's whips

Killua easily catching Riehlvelt's whips

As the announcer excitedly comments on Riehlvelt's close escape, Killua tells himself that he missed because he jumped too high. Riehlvelt then pulls out two whips called the Two-Headed Snake-Twin Serpents and swings them all around himself in his Song of Defense. The announcer notes that the whips protect Riehlvelt as he moves closer to his opponent. Riehlvelt confidently tells Killua that another sneak attack won't work given the speed of his whips and the size of the platform.

Standing his ground, Killua suddenly grabs hold of both whips and says that it looked like they were barely moving. Left speechless initially, Riehlvelt then uses Thunder Serpent as he flips the switches on the whips and sends electricity through Killua's body. He laughs maniacally and tells Killua that he is the first person to catch his whips, adding that the electricity has always dispatched any fighters who have tried to stop them. However, before Riehlvelt can finish his speech, Killua pulls hard on both whips and sends Riehlvelt flying out of his wheelchair, telling him that while electricity still hurts him, it won't incapacitate him since he has been trained to endure torture.

Chap 59 - Killua using Riehlvelt's electricity against him

Riehlvelt begins to fall back down and begs to be caught, and Killua happily obliges as he holds out both his hands still holding the whips and covered in electricity. Once Riehlvelt falls into Killua's arms, he passes out from the shock and the referee declares Killua the winner by knockout. Outside the arena, Gon congratulates Killua, who reminds him that he's fighting on the 10th. Gon wishes that he could have done what Killua did, and Killua stresses that even he would have fainted if he had touched the whips. Killua asks him what he will do, and Gon assures him that he has a plan, with Killua realizing that Gon watched the match in order to develop his own strategy.

On June 10th, it's stated that Gido forfeited to Killua, who is seen watching among the crowd as Gon's match against Riehlvelt prepares to start. The announcer introduces the fighters and reveals that with five wins and three losses, Riehlvelt cannot afford another loss. She also notes that Riehlvelt already has his whips drawn while Gon is without his fishing rod. Once the referee begins the match, Riehlvelt immediately starts his Song of Defense to prevent Gon from attacking him, but Gon squats down and rips up one of the stone tiles, throwing it toward a terrified Riehlvelt who uses his Aura Burst to escape the attack.

Chap 59 - Hisoka offering to fight Gon after his victory

Hisoka offering to fight Gon after his victory

As Killua realizes what Gon is doing, Gon suddenly jumps in front of Riehlvelt and leaves him startled. Also watching among the crowd, Hisoka notes that Riehlvelt couldn't change directions that quickly and had to move forward, also forced to stop his whips since he lost his balance after accelerating. As Hisoka adds that it's the perfect opportunity to make a move, Gon does just that and restrains both of Riehlvelt's wrists, forcing him to drop his whips. He then picks them up and wraps the ends around Riehlvelt's neck, pretending to turn the electricity to maximum and causing Riehlvelt to pass out from fear. After the referee declares Gon the winner and he enjoys the crowd's cheering, Hisoka meets him outside the ring and congratulates him on his victory, keeping his promise as he offers to fight Gon whenever he wants. Gon appears both nervous and serious as he watches Hisoka leave the arena.
