As the marathon goes on, Nicholas gives up. He is mocked by the Amori Brothers who tell him he's only an ordinary guy and is not fit for the Hunter Exam. Tonpa thanks the Amori brothers for making his job easier as the "Rookie Crusher" and pays them with money.
After a long run, the candidates begin to run up a long staircase. Leorio is eager to finish the marathon. He is accompanied by Kurapika, who shares the story of his clan and their Scarlet Eyes. Leorio tells him that his only goal is money, but Kurapika knows that he's lying. With a little push, Leorio tells Kurapika his story. He wants to become a doctor, but he needs money and a Hunter License to become one.
Meanwhile, Killua and Gon are just behind the examiner. Gon asks Killua about his reason to become a Hunter, and Killua answers that he is not interested in it and really only views the exam as a game. Killua asks Gon the same question, and he replies that he wants to become a Hunter just like his father.
They have finally reached the exit. Satotz explains that they will now pass through the Numere Wetlands, also called the "Swindler's Swamp." He warns the candidates that if they get themselves tricked by the creatures living here, they'll end up being dead.
