Synopsis[]
As the examinees stare at the Milsy Wetlands, another examinee is seen crawling up the stairs of the tunnel, but the large metal door shuts before he can make it outside. Satotz addresses the silent group and repeats his warning about the swamp's deadly creatures, telling them to stay close to him and remain alert. With Leorio thankful for the warning, a wounded man suddenly appears from behind the tunnel's exit. He declares that Satotz is an imposter, stating that he's the real examiner. To prove his claim to the confused examinees, the man reveals a seemingly dead Man-faced Ape with a face very similar to Satotz's, explaining that they disguise themselves and lead humans into the swamp where they work with their fellow creatures to set a trap.

The man then claims that the creatures are trying to eliminate all the examinees, but three playing cards suddenly pierce his face and leave him lying dead on the ground, revealing that he was a Man-faced Ape. After Satotz is seen to have caught four cards, Hisoka chuckles and shuffles the rest of his cards between his hands. The seemingly dead Man-faced Ape leaps up and tries to make its escape, but Hisoka quickly throws out a card and kills it with a shot to the head. Hisoka says that they can be sure that Satotz is the real examiner since they are skilled Hunters who would easily be able to dodge his attacks. Satotz takes it as a compliment, but warns Hisoka that the next attack will result in his disqualification. After Hisoka understands the warning, several birds suddenly swoop down and begin eating the dead man's body, leaving Leorio disgusted at the brutality.
Satotz is impressed by the creature's trick to mislead the examinees and guesses that many of them were starting to be convinced by its claim, with Leorio and Hanzo left embarrassed. He then leads the 311 remaining examinees into the wetlands, and Leorio immediately complains about another marathon (now through wilderness). As fog suddenly appears around the examinees, Killua tells Gon that they should move to the front, and Gon agrees since they want to stay close to Satotz. Killua also points out that it will get them away from Hisoka, smiling as he guesses that he will use the fog to kill more of the examinees. With Gon taken aback, Killua reveals that he is like Hisoka and can smell his murderous intent. Gon replies that he doesn't seem like Hisoka, but Killua chuckles and says that he's just pretending to be innocent, adding that he will see.
The wetlands' creatures killing several examinees
Gon then yells out for Leorio and Kurapika to move to the front, but Leorio yells back that they would if they could see where they were going. Gon tells them to try harder, but the fog becomes even thicker as they move deeper into the wetlands. Two examinees remind each other to follow the shadows in front of them, but the shadows begin to disappear and the two hear a strange sound. Seeing a strawberry at first, the examinees suddenly encounter multiple Noggin Lugging Tortoises and scream out in horror. Gon hears their cries, and Killua tells him that they are already dead. Two of the Amori Brothers realize that the 100 or so examinees behind them are all gone. It's stated that the tortoises are predators that take advantage of the fog and use the straw-man berries on their backs to lure in lost people.
Several of the examinees who escaped from the tortoises are suddenly eaten alive by a Frog-In-Waiting. Others fall upon a pit of spikes after being misled by a Ruse Raven that then feeds on their corpses. Some explode after stepping on Claymore Mushrooms, which multiply by spreading their spores on their prey, and others are put to sleep by Hypnosis Butterflies, which turn their prey into live food for their larvae. Leorio and Kurapika hear the screams and cries from their fellow examinees, understanding that many of them got lost and are getting killed. As Leorio suddenly remembers that all his weapons are in his briefcase, Gon is seen carrying it on his fishing rod and hopes that his two friends are okay.
Several examinees being attacked by Hisoka
Killua quickly gets Gon's attention and stresses that they need to focus on their own problems, pointing out that they can barely see the people in front of them and that they will end up dead if they get separated. However, as Killua tells Gon to assume that his friends are still alive as long as he doesn't hear their screams, several examinees are suddenly attacked by Hisoka's playing cards, including Kurapika who blocks a few with his bokken and Leorio who screams out in pain after one pierces his left arm. Gon immediately runs back toward them and yells out Leorio's name, with Killua yelling out Gon's name as well. Leorio holds his wound and angrily questions Hisoka, who chuckles as he shuffles his cards and happily replies that he's playing examiner.
