Dalzollene's manga appearance

He was a well-built man with a short haircut. His most noticeable features were the tattoos under both of his eyes that reached his cheekbones. He was often seen wearing a sweater and pants.

Personality[]

He appeared to enjoy music and was dedicated to his job. While he tended to act like an intimidating Mafia member when angered, he was shown to stay very calm and collected most of the time.

Plot[]

Yorknew City arc[]

Within the Nostrade's Mansion, Dalzollene appears on a large screen and talks to the bodyguard applicants about their task to collect one of the items and return with it after one month. When the applicants try to leave, they realize that the door is locked. Dalzollene explains that they need to be strong enough to leave the mansion alive as armed assailants suddenly burst into the room.[3]

Dalzollene giving the new bodyguards their first mission

The following month, the four applicants return to Dalzollene, each with an item from the list that was required for the job offer. Impressed, he formally hires them and introduces himself as the head bodyguard. He explains that their first mission is to safely escort their boss to Yorknew City from Lingon Airport so they can attend the Underground Auction the following day. After arguing with Kurapika, Dalzollene takes the new bodyguards to meet the boss.[2]

Walking down the hallway, Baise spots a man frozen within a portrait and asks what it is. Dalzollene informs the group that the man was a former bodyguard who didn't obey him and listened to assumptions made by the enemy, putting the boss' life in danger. He reveals that they disposed of him and hired them to replace him. At the end of the hallway, Dalzollene knocks on the door and informs the person behind it that the newcomers have arrived. The boss allows them to enter, and Dalzollene introduces the new bodyguards to Neon Nostrade.[2] On the day before the Underground Auction, on the Lingon Airport runway, Dalzollene is accompanied by Ivlenkov, Shachmono Tocino, and Squala as he keeps a close eye on Neon, who is seen exiting a large airship and is then led into a car by Dalzollene so they can drive to the city.[4]

On the way there, Dalzollene hands Neon her prediction requests for September. She complains about her increased workload, and Dalzollene apologizes on her father's behalf, explaining that the clients are her father's friends. After Neon calls her father and argues with him, she starts working on her fortune-telling. Dalzollene reads one of the predictions and becomes anxious. He congratulates Neon after her work and promises her that the bodyguards will accompany her for a shopping spree. Upon arriving at the Hotel Beitacle, Dalzollene contacts Light Nostrade to inform him of a discrepancy in the recent batch of fortunes that Neon composed.[4]

With numerous fortunes predicting that those who attend the auction will die, Light forbids his daughter from attending for her own safety. Dalzollene is concerned about how Neon will take the news, explaining that she becomes unbearable when she doesn't get her way. Light then orders him to simply buy whatever she wants, no matter the cost. That night, Dalzollene congratulates the bodyguards for a job well done and details their next mission to them, including what their respective jobs are and what items need to be won at the auction. After Neon is informed that she cannot attend the auction, she throws a massive tantrum. Now sporting some bruises, Dalzollene contacts Light and explains that they don't know how to proceed.[5] However, Neon eventually tires herself out, and Dalzollene explains that she wanted to attend the auction in person. Light agrees to cancel all of his plans and head to Yorknew immediately, but orders Dalzollene to acquire the mummy at all costs. Dalzollene then contacts Kurapika, who reports that everything is fine outside the Cemetery Building.[6]

After the Phantom Troupe massacres all of the Underground Auction attendees, Melody contacts Dalzollene and informs him of the situation at hand. Dalzollene anxiously orders Melody and Kurapika to find out what happened while he contacts the others. After finding out everything, Kurapika contacts and informs Dalzollene about all of the missing attendees and stolen auction items. Now enraged, Dalzollene proclaims that the thieves must be caught and tells Kurapika that he and Squala will regroup with him near Central Square. He then orders Squala to leave five guard dogs behind for Neon and her attendants.[7]

Upon arriving at the location where the Phantom Troupe's hot-air balloon was brought down, Dalzollene is left dumbfound by Uvogin's brute strength, while Kurapika comments on his power as a Nen user. Squala quickly begins to panic and claims that he wants no part of making a move against Uvogin, and Basho agrees with him. Although Dalzollene also agrees with their assessment, he still wishes to try and stop them. A man named Worm then appears from underground and introduces himself as one of the Shadow Beasts. Dalzollene tells him that they are with the Ritz Family, and Worm warns them to stay back as Porcupine, Rabid Dog, and Leech appear out of nowhere and confront Uvogin.[8] However, once the Spider defeats all four, Kurapika sees no other alternative and tries to go after Uvogin by himself, much to Dalzollene's dismay. At that very moment, a beaten and mangled Worm suddenly appears, warning them not to approach the Spiders.[9]

Kurapika remains resolute, and as Dalzollene tries to stop him, Melody suddenly uses her ability to calm everyone down, suggesting that they all carefully consider what to do next. After collecting his thoughts, Kurapika still wishes to capture Uvogin and asks Dalzollene to let him do it since he stands a good chance. Dalzollene agrees to it, and Kurapika manages to capture Uvogin with his chains. With Uvogin as their prisoner, the bodyguards head back to Yorknew City. But on their way back, Dalzollene contacts Melody to warn her that they're being tailed, but the Shadow Beast Owl impedes the tailing car.[10] Dalzollene believes that it was the remaining Shadow Beasts that stopped them, and orders Kurapika to take a different route back to the city, changing the location to plan C.[11]

Dalzollene Weilding A Sword

Dalzollene weilding a sword he intends to use against Uvogin

Later that night, at an undisclosed underground room, Dalzollene and the other bodyguards try to interrogate Uvogin about the missing auction attendees and items. Dalzollene even uses a sword to try and stab Uvogin with it, but the blade immediately breaks after Uvogin uses his aura to shield himself. Uvogin then admits to them that the auction attendees were all murdered, and the items were already gone when they arrived to steal them. Kurapika learns that three of their comrades were among those killed and angrily punches Uvogin in the face. Dalzollene then intervenes and tries to reason with Kurapika. He later contacts the Mafia and informs them that the Nostrade Family has captured one of the thieves, stunned to hear that the Shadow Beasts are all dead.[11]

Dalzollene stabbed from behind by Phinks

Dalzollene killed from behind by Phinks

Soon afterward, supposed people from the Mafia arrive, and Dalzollene leads them to Uvogin. Upon reaching the room, Dalzollene is instantly killed by Phinks who impales his chest with his right arm.[11] Sometime after Uvogin escapes, Melody tries to contact Dalzollene, but guesses that he has been killed when she is unable to reach him. Without a leader, it's ultimately decided that Kurapika will take over as head bodyguard and be the one who informs Light Nostrade of all that has occurred that night. Upon hearing of Dalzollene's death, Light is left in disbelief since he was a Nen user who could have ten bullets fired at him and walk away with no injuries.[12]

Equipment[]

Dao: Dalzollene's weapon resembles a sabre or a dao with a thin blade embellished with inscriptions. It instantly broke when he tried to stab Uvogin.[11]

Abilities & Powers[]

Dalzollene used to be the head of the Nostrade Family's bodyguards and Light Nostrade's right-hand man before Kurapika took over after his death. As such, he had authority over his subordinates and was very competent in his job. He also had enough physical strength to crush a metallic rod.[2]

Nen[]

Dalzollene is an Enhancer*[1] It is also suggested from Light Nostrade's dialogue that Dalzollene is capable of enhancing his body with Nen, able to face ten bullets without being injured.[12]

Anime and Manga Differences[]

Dalzollene2

Dalzollene with his dao

  • In the 1999 anime adaptation, the runes on his sword increased its power when infused with Nen, suggesting that they are possibly the same as the Divine Script. With them, he managed to pierce Uvogin's skin by five millimeters by stabbing him into one of the wounds inflicted by Rabid Dog.[13]
  • In the same adaptation, after being stabbed by Phinks, he still manages to stand up and confront the Troupe in order to save his comrades by buying them enough time. He is then killed by the Troupe when they use his own dao sword to stab him.[13]
  • In the same adaptation, Dalzollene appears to be fond of music as he can play Chopin's Heroic Polonaise very well on his piano.[14]
