Secret Trick × Registration × The Battle Begins (裏ワザ×登録×バトル開始, Uchiwaza × Tōroku × Batoru kaishi) is the 39th episode of the original Hunter × Hunter anime. It first aired on September 16th, 2000.

Overview[]

Gon and Killua make it past Hisoka's Ren and sign up for fights on the 200th floor of Heavens Arena. Gon wants to test his new powers and fight a man who uses his Nen on toy tops as weapons. During the fight, Gon learns Zetsu to sense the tops and avoid them, but is eventually beaten.

Synopsis[]

Wing explains to Gon and Killua that the only protection they can get against Nen attacks is becoming Nen users themselves and demonstrates Nen by crushing a section of the wall in front of him. Wing also explains how Zushi was able to learn Ten in six months with dedicated training, but Killua says they don't have that kind of time.

Wing initianing Gon and Killua

Wing switches to awakening their Nen by force by using his own Hatsu, but warns them of how dangerous this method is. He considers it necessary, however, since he is worried for the boy's safety once they reach the 200th floor of Heavens Arena, where everyone will be a Nen user who will initiate the boys into Nen by force, regardless of the lethality of them doing so. Wing also believes that the boys will be able to handle what Wing will do to them and proceed.

Wing puts his hands on the boys' backs, and they feel a power surround them before their auras suddenly gush out of their whole bodies. Wing instructs them to contain and control their aura so it doesn't deplete them completely. He is shocked to see how quickly they can do this.

He tests the boys by attacking them with a vicious aura, warning them to brace themselves.

Killua & Gon HXH 99 EP39 002

Gon and Killua finally reach Hisoka

Sometime later, up on the 200th floor, Gon and Killua approach Hisoka, who they are now easily able to stride towards despite his oppressive aura. When they reach him, Hisoka welcomes them to the floor, but says he won't even consider fighting either of them until they win at least one match. Hisoka departs, and the two boys rush to sign in at the front desk. On their way there, however, Sadaso, Riehlvelt, and Gido suspiciously watch them from the shadows.

The two boys register on the floor, and the attendant tries to explain the perks of moving up the highest floors to them, but none interests them. Killua reconsiders getting to the highest floor since he has no motivation anymore. On the other hand, Gon, who needs to win at least one match to challenge Hisoka, registers for a match. Gido, Riehlvelt, and Sadaso approach them from behind, looming around, but neither Gon nor Killua seems intimidated by them. Once in their room, Gon is informed that his match will happen the next day.

The next day, Cocco introduces Gido and Gon's fight to the audience. Gon remembers how he promised Wing that neither he nor Killua would participate in matches for two full months until he was sure they'd be ready for it, and he apologizes to Wing in his mind for going against his wishes. Downstairs, Zushi and Wing catch Gon's match being broadcasted on a TV.

Gido HXH 99 EP39 001

Gido prepares to launch his tops

As the match beings, Gido launches his spinning tops at Gon, who immediately gets knocked around by them, taking multiple hits. Gon attempts to feel the presence of the Nen-powered tops and closes his eyes. He is successful, but cannot hold his Ten simultaneously and gets knocked out of the ring by one of the tops. However, Gon notices that the top that knocked into him doesn't continue to attack him, and instead uselessly hits against the wall, and can figure out that the tops aren't targeting him.

Wing explains to Zushi as they watch the match that simple objects like tops can't be given complex commands, so they've likely just been instructed to hit any obstacle. Gon, confident that he can attack Gido if he avoids the tops, tries to jump up and strike Gido from above, but Gido spins around at an incredible speed, becoming a top himself, and deflects Gon off of him and sends Gon flying out of the ring.

Wing insists to Zushi that Gon isn't experienced and trained enough to handle this situation and has little to no options in this fight. To both Wing and Zushi's shock, Gon attempts to use Zetsu, despite not even being taught Zetsu yet, and in the process, lets down all of his Ten, leaving him defenseless. Gon can dodge all the spinning tops coming at him while trying to devise his next action. Hisoka watches from the sidelines, intrigued.
