Summary[]

2011 EP78 Colt issuing a command

Colt commanding the soldiers to capture the adult humans

The Queen orders Colt to lead all her soldiers to capture more food, especially highly nutritious specimens. The narrator comments that Chimera Ants are Class-1 quarantined, carnivorous insects: once they have grown beyond two meters in length, humans do not stand a chance against them. While working the fields, a man in a village sights a swarm approaching. Befuddled, he asks what it is. When they finally see the Chimera Ants descending on them, the villagers run away in terror. Colt commands the soldiers to capture only the fully grown individuals since they provide more nutrition. Colt flies back to the Queen with his underlings.

A Chimera Ant nest

It is explained Chimera Ant Queens move around until they find a place they like; at that point, they birth more and more ants to form an army, and then carpenter ants to build a nest at incredible speed. The queen will remain in the nest until her death. Assuming one grew to two meters and began to target humans, there should be entire towns missing. However, Spinner, at the computer in a hotel room, informs Kite, Gon and Killua that she cannot find anything, and in six months, the largest group of missing people numbered ten. Gon inquires whether it is possible to look up single people individually, but she replies that there are way too many. She tries to check which areas have the highest concentration of missing people, but the data is two years old. Gon and Killua suggest they search for sightings, again to no avail. Banana begins to suspect they are getting worked up over nothing, to which Spinner agrees.

78 - Spin

Spinner searches for clues on the Chimera Ant's location

However, Kite asks her to bring up the tidal data from when the arm was found. She does so, and Kite tells her to go back ten days, to locate any currents that might have carried it in that time, as he believes it could have been severed when the ant made landfall. Spinner says it might come from the Balsa Islands, including the Mitene Union, where NGL is located. Aside from NGL, there is also the Republic of East Gorteau, and there is no getting any sort of information out of those two countries. Killua asks what NGL is, and Banana replies it is an acronym standing for Neo-Green Life. It is a country founded by people who wanted to live in nature. Bringing machinery into its borders is a crime, and, according to Spinner, when in '82, three journalists attempted to trespass, one of them was sentenced to death, and the others are still in jail. The Amateur Hunters ask what NGL people would do if they were to come in contact with the Chimera Ants. Kite replies they would probably do nothing, as they let epidemics run their course rather than letting international doctors in. Even if they tried to spread the news, the underdeveloped means of transport and communication would make it impossible for them to succeed before it is too late. If that arm belonged to a Queen, she might have already constructed her nest.

2011 EP78 Colt refuses Alligator's challenge

Colt refuses Alligator's challenge

In the nest, Alligator challenges Colt to capture more humans than him. His assertive behavior prompts Colt to remind him that he follows only orders issued by the Queen. Alligator says he is just afraid of losing since his squadron is made up of the elite, and reckons he should let the other Squadron Leaders in. Moreover, by competing, everyone will capture more prey. Upon hearing this, Colt agrees, but remarks that the quality is also important before leaving. Alligator comments that he is too stiff, but Turtle asserts it is part of his charm, and Peggy adds that the human he once was must have been pretty zealous. Back at Kurt and Reina's home, their mother Haruna offers a bowl of broth to a deity and starts to weep for her children. On the table are the other three bowls. She wanders off into the forest despite being told to rest by the other villagers. They also mention that she searches the forest for her children from morning to night every day.

2011 EP78 Haruna shielding a child

Haruna shielding a child

While playing, some children in the village notice big insects flying toward them. After hearing a scream, Haruna runs back to the village and shields a child from Colt. Colt stops and is slightly taken aback, but after a moment, he flies over them before grabbing another male adult and leaving. The other surviving villagers tell Haruna that there's no doubt that her children were taken by those monsters, leaving the mother in shock. In another village, Turtle and his squad are seen rounding up humans for the Queen when suddenly, the soldier ants start getting shot down by humans with guns. They state that they had orders to eliminate the ants from Gyro, who they say is their king. Turtle manages to escape by rolling away in his shell.

HxH2011 EP78 Pokkle & Ponzu before the NGL expedition

Pokkle and Ponzu listening to Balda and Pekuba's report

Meanwhile, Gon, Killua, Kite, and the amateur hunters plan their route to the NGL. Stick makes a pun about getting into the country with nasty rumors. When Gon and Killua ask about it, Kite tells them about , a drug that is rumored to be manufactured in the NGL. Spinner also adds that when people try to get in to investigate those rumors, they get executed. At the same time, in a different location, Pokkle is seen talking to Balda and Pekuba about a reporter that wasn't executed after entering the NGL as they were not investigating the dark rumors. Ponzu is also with them, listening to the conversation. Pekuba adds that the reporter was secretly wearing a wire, and they were able to intercept their final message. In the recording, the reporter is heard screaming about monsters and giant bugs before the message is cut off. Although Pokkle says that it's not much to go on, he wants to see it for himself as a Hunter of Fantastic Beasts. Ponzu expresses her desire to go with them to the NGL. At first, Pokkle refuses as it would be too dangerous. Still, once Ponzu reminds them of the NGL's strict no-technology policy, she is able to convince them that her bees will be useful for communication.

2011 EP78 Gon Killua Kite at the airport

Gon, Killua and Kite at the airport

At the airport, Kite asks Gon and Killua if they're sure about coming with them to the NGL. They confirm, and Kite also mentions that if anything were to happen, he would prioritize saving the amateur hunters and that the kids would need to be responsible for protecting themselves. Kite adds that if he himself were to be in danger, they must leave him and escape. Back at the Chimera Ant Nest, more human bodies are added to a pile to be fed to the Queen. Alligator approaches Colt and boasts about his squad bringing in more, but the latter responds that quality is more important than quantity. Alligator takes this moment to mention that Turtle ran into a human resistance. Turtle is currently with Peggy asking for information, to which the latter tells him about weapons called guns. Turtle then asks about whether humans also have armies, and also about names. Colt and Alligator are seen listening in on the conversation.

The eggs containing the Royal Guards

The squadron leaders receive a signal from the Queen. As they make their way over to her, they comment that the signal she sends out makes their heads hurt, and Zazan wishes that she could talk like they can. Once gathered, the Queen informs them that she will now focus entirely on giving birth to the King. Turtle asks to speak and informs her of the human resistance, but the Queen leaves the issue to them. He also asks for permission to have names and explains the concept. The Queen gives permission, and the squadron leaders are dismissed. The Queen finds their behavior fascinating and wonders if she may have human blood as well. She enters a section of the nest with three large eggs hanging from the ceiling for the Royal Guards and says that she will name them herself. Meanwhile, Gon and Killua have a talk in the airship on their way to the Mitene Union. Despite what Kite said at the airport, Gon declares that he won't run away and asks Killua what he would do. Killua just tells him that it depends and he will decide when the time comes. Kite is nearby, overhearing their conversation but does not intervene.
