Encounter × Hesitation × Departure (出会い×とまどい×出航, Deai × Tomadoi × Shukkou) is the 2nd episode of the original Hunter × Hunter anime. It aired on October 23rd, 1999. The events of this episode did not occur in the manga.
Overview[]
Gon arrives at a port town to find a ship that takes passengers to Dolle Harbor. He meets a man named Leorio, who is also intent on taking the exam. With his help, Gon is able to free animals from a cruel exhibition, including a Foxbear cub that was caught by a man claiming to be a Hunter. The man is revealed to be a fake when Leorio takes him down and discovers his fake Hunter license. Afterward, Gon and Leorio manage to board the ship heading to to Dolle.

Leorio, hungry and penniless, notices an arm-wrestling event involving someone that claims to be a Hunter. The individuals running the event offer prize money and admission to an animal exhibition at the port to anyone who can defeat the Hunter. Leorio challenges the Hunter to a match, but he loses his strength due to hunger and was unable to win. Gon approaches and offers an apple, as he had heard Leorio's stomach growl during the match. Gon asks for information on how to get to Dolle Harbor, but Leorio ignores him. A man overhears Gon and offers to take him there, and the boy agrees to follow him without suspecting a thing. Leorio notices this and calls the man out for attempted kidnapping. The man tries to stab him, but Leorio is able to block the attack and knocks him down. The man runs off after realizing he stood no chance against him.
Gon retrieves Leorio's briefcase
Gon begins to follow Leorio again. Although Leorio tries to escape him, Gon is able to catch up to him every time. At a restaurant, a waiter approaches Kurapika but backs away when he sees a poisonous spider on his table. Kurapika's eyes briefly flash red and swiftly gets rid of the spider with his fork. Nearby, a man is seen stealing fish and the clerk chases after the thief. Leorio uses this opportunity to steal some fish for himself. While eating, a man steals Leorio's briefcase but Gon uses his fishing rod to retrieve it. Leorio gives up and tells Gon that the Kaijinmaru is the ship that takes passengers to Dolle Harbor.
Gon and the Foxbear
The Kaijinmaru arrives at the port, and Leorio is seen working at the arm-wrestling Hunter's animal exhibition to pay for the ship ride. He sees the Hunter walk by with a caged Foxbear cub. While looking for the Kaijinmaru at the port, a man reels Gon into the animal exhibition. Meanwhile, Leorio serves tea for his employer, who then begins to open up a safe to pay the Hunter for the Foxbear cub. Leorio is dismissed, but continues to eavesdrop on their conversation. At the exhibition, the crowd panics as Gon approaches an agitated adult Foxbear. He is reminded of Konta and reaches out to it, feeling sorry for the caged creature. The Foxbear licks Gon's hand and the surrounding people are impressed by his ability to tame it. The Hunter along with the exhibition owner confronts Gon. The Foxbear sees the Hunter holding its cub in a handheld cage and tries to attack him, but is unable to reach. Gon begins to wonder if this is what Hunters really are.
Leorio and Gon aboard the Kaijinmaru
Gon is imprisoned along with the Foxbear, but is able to escape when Leorio brings him the keys. Gon decides to use the keys to free all of the caged animals, and is approached by the exhibition owner and the Hunter. Gon tells them that they are bad people, and that he isn't a Hunter. He prepares to attack Gon when Leorio appears and punches the Hunter in the face, knocking him unconscious. He then shows Gon the guy's fake Hunter License, saying that a real Hunter wouldn't have been taken down from a single punch. The two run towards the Kaijinmaru, but the ship has already embarked and left the shore. Seeing that they are still after the ship, the Captain tells them that they are already too late and that he won't stop the ship for them. Gon tells Leorio to follow him and they get to higher ground. Gon has Leorio grab on to him as he uses his fishing rod to swing them on to the ship. They were successful, and Leorio finally tells Gon his name. As Gon bids Whale Island farewell, the Captain notes that he won't be bored on this year's trip to Dolle.

Manga & Anime Differences[]
- In the manga, Leorio and Gon meet on the boat. In this episode, however, they meet on Whale Island while the ship was stopping by. Kurapika was in a restaurant on the island as well.
