"I will never forget my grudge, Netero."

— Jed to Isaac Netero in "Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission"

Jed (ジェド, Jedo) was the leader of the Shadow. He only appears in the movie The Last Mission, in which he is the main antagonist.[1]

Appearance[]

The original Jed was a toned, muscular man similar in build to Netero. He had light grey eyes and short white hair, which was blonde when he was younger. He appeared wearing a tight-fitting, short-sleeved black top, a dark vest, dark pants, dark boots, black fingerless gloves, and bandages on his forearms. In one memory of Netero's, Jed and Netero were seen wearing a matching white gi. When the original Jed used On, the whites of his eyes flashed dark, and his irises and pupils yellow.[1]

Jed's reincarnation was only ever seen with his On eyes. His reincarnated form appeared much younger than the original Jed was when he died and thinner and less muscular. Jed and his group often wore beige robes with hoods when together. Jed's outfit consisted of dark pants and dark boots, over which he wore a long, dark purple robe, gloves, and a dark red and gold pelerine.[1]

Both iterations of Jed wore a signature ring on the middle finger of their left hand.[1]

Personality[]

After seeing his people killed at the hands of Netero and seeing so many hardships because of the Hunters, Jed was consumed by his hate toward the Hunters and believed strongly that all Hunters were evil. After his reincarnation, the new Jed claimed to have lived a difficult life, made worse by the Hunter Association and the establishment they continued to uphold. He considered himself an oppressed individual.[1]

Netero described Jed as being a man completely blinded by rage, although this was due to his connection with On. In Netero's early memories of Jed, Jed acted rather amicably with Netero, despite being rivals.[1]

Even after being consumed by hate, Jed is shown to care about his comrades. Jed was very close to Shura, Rengoku, and Gaki, being the people who gave him a new life. After Gaki's death, Jed sobbed and claimed that Gaki was much more than a friend to him, considering him a blood brother instead.[1]

However, despite considering the three of them like family, Jed essentially made Shura, Rengoku, and Gaki prisoners of his On when he formed his contract with them by giving them his blood, as described by Netero, and they all died as a result of his On. He ensured that they would give their lives to take down the Hunter Association, although they also agreed to those terms when they contracted with Jed.[1]

Jed was, in some instances, a reasonable man, and in others, not, depending on whether his situation had to do with his grudge. He told Gaki not to kill Leorio when they had the opportunity since it was unrelated to their mission at the time, and Jed's group did not seem to harm or interfere with any civilians or reporters outside of Heavens Arena even when dealing with them. However, when Jed was seen arguing with Netero about the Hunter Bylaws, Jed was only willing to consider arguments that supported his grudge, and didn't care about the points in the Bylaws that put him and his people in the wrong.[1]

Background[]

Jed was a legendary warrior with a fated relation to Isaac Netero.[2]

Originally, Jed appointed himself as the leader of the Shadow. Decades before the events of Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission, his relationship to Isaac Netero seemed amicable, yet rivalrous. Later on, Netero killed Jed and the other On users for heinous crimes they had committed using On.[1]

Another form of Jed was brought to life by Shura, Rengoku, and Gaki in Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission; it is debated in the movie who exactly this Jed was. Beans hypothesized that he may have been a descendant of the Jed that Netero killed decades prior, but also that there were no records of Jed having any relatives or descendants. Netero seemed to automatically understand or assume that this Jed was a reincarnation of the On of the Jed he defeated decades prior to the events of Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission.[1]

Plot[]

The Last Mission[]

Jed is first seen in a flashback "decades ago," bleeding and hunched over on the ground, surrounded by several bodies. He had been in battle with Netero, who was trying to wipe out Jed's people, the On users. Netero tries to get Jed to stop fighting against him, but Jed calls upon his ability Grudge of 100 Demons and Rakshasa appears behind him. Jed swears never to forget what had occurred on that day, and that On will continue to live on even at the cost of his own life. Netero, in return swears to eradicate both Jed and On, and calls upon Bodhisattva to fight against Jed.[1]

In the present day, the hooded figures of a reincarnated Jed, as well as Shura, Rengoku, and Gaki, are seen trudging through the snow near a village. The group go to free the prisoners who had been locked up there, killing the guards using On. Jed rallies the prisoners by swearing to take vengeance on the Hunter Association, insisting that they do the same as revenge for being locked up. It is unclear in the film if these prisoners are the On users who were sent to Kanan Prison Camp like Rengoku was.[1]

Later on, while the fights are about to begin at Heavens Arena, Jed's group is seen walking through the city streets, and they come across Leorio. Gaki knocks him out, but Jed says not to kill him, and instead, they throw Leorio down a sewer grate.[1]

During Netero's announcement before the beginning of the Heavens Arena tournament, Jed and his group stand among the crowd in the arena. After Shura tells the group that they should meet again in Nirvana, Jed gives the signal to his group, and his members dash off in different directions. Jed heads to the locker room where most of the Floor Masters anticipate their fights and subdues them. After Rengoku has killed herself in order to seal Netero's Nen, Jed walks into Netero's chambers. He throws Gon and Killua out the window when Gon tries to threaten him.[1]

Jed makes a video call to the Hunter Association, which Beans picks up. Jed refers to his group as the Shadow and explains that at dawn, his group will execute Netero and all the hostages they have taken inside Heavens Arena if the Association doesn't release the Black Report to the public. He claims that the Black Record contains many other awful missions carried out by the Hunter Association long ago, so he intends to expose those records to the world.

Jed takes Netero up to the rooftop, where several blimps fly overhead, filled with guards sent to deal with the situation at Heavens Arena. Before they can get too close, Jed summons Rakshasa to destroy the blimps in the air. Netero watches in horror at the amount of On Jed releases and is certain that this Jed is an incarnation of the one he fought in the past.

In another flashback, Rengoku, Shura, and Gaki are seen wandering through the desert, being informed by an elderly man in a cave that they may be able to bring back Jed. Later, the three of them stand in the rocky area where Jed and his people are massacred, and Shura starts a contract with On. The rock in front of them erupts in a vortex of On, and they are presented with a newborn baby possessing Jed's On-filled eyes. They watch as Jed grows through several life stages, and the three bow before him. They swear their allegiance to Jed, and Jed accepts their contract on the condition that they use the On in order to kill the Hunters.[1]

Back in the present, after Gon and Killua have defeated Gaki in battle and Gaki has warmed up to them, Jed is seen standing on the roof. He closes his eyes and Gaki blows up, revealing that one of their conditions with Jed was that they would explode themselves if they were to lose to a Hunter. Jed laughs to himself in hysterics on the rooftop while tears stream down his face. He cries while swearing to Gaki that his death won't have been in vain. After Shura dies during his fight with Kurapika, Jed similarly promises Shura that his death will be used to strengthen Jed's power and avenge Shura.

Gon and Killua join Jed and Netero on the rooftop, where Gon challenges Jed. The two boys try to fight against Jed, but he manages to either dodge or counter all of their attacks. Eventually, Killua gets a hit on Jed, slicing his cheek, which causes some of Jed's blood to sprout out and get on Gon, sealing his Nen.

Jed knocks Killua down, and Gon forms a contract with conditions with On in order to be able to fight against Jed. Even though Gon is then able to fight Jed on his level, Jed seems happy that Gon made a contract with On. However, his mood shifts when Gon refuses to join Jed's team.

Killua manages to break through the barrier surrounding Rengoku's body and convince the remaining spirit of Rengoku to free Netero so that he can fight against Jed. Just as they fought decades before, Netero summons Bodhisattva to fight against Jed's Rakshasa, and the two of them do battle. Netero claims that Jed is no different in his endeavors than a Hunter and that he and Jed are just two sides of the same coin, which only angers Jed further. Netero admits that he feels guilty for not being able to save Jed all those years ago.[1]

Jed's Rakshasa

Jed and Rakshasa

In the middle of their fight, Gon returned with newfound vigor and is surrounded by light, and his dialogue is purposefully made inaudible when he says what he plans to do with Jed. Gon and Jed fight, and Gon manages to land a blow directly into Jed's stomach, causing dark blood to spill from his mouth. Rakshasa shatters to pieces, and Gon tells Jed he empathizes with his sadness and that he just wants Jed to rest.[1]

In the end, Jed is defeated solely by Gon's compassion.

Even after his defeat, Jed is still angry, saying he had no regrets for anything that happened. He swears revenge against Netero in his dying moments, before turning to golden dust and fading away.[1]

A small piece of a Hunter Coin is left in Jed's wake. In Netero's memory, a young Jed accepts defeat but swears to settle the score with Netero in the future. The two seem amicable in the memory, and Netero flips a Hunter Coin into the air for Jed to catch. The coin lands on tails in Jed's hand. Jed tells Netero that he'll be in charge of the Shadow if Netero will be in charge of the Light. The two part ways with Jed insinuating that they'll clash again, and he breaks the Hunter Coin and throws half of it back to Netero.[1]

In the present, Netero wishes for Jed to rest in Nirvana, free from both light and darkness.[1]

After Jed's death, and therefore the death of On, those previously affected by Jed's blood return to normal.[1]

Abilities & Powers[]

At one point, before dying, Jed had all the benefits his status as a Hunter granted. Jed was an extremely capable fighter able to fight on par with incredibly strong opponents like Isaac Netero, even hand to hand, and overpower both Gon and Killua with great ease.[1]

Nen[]

Having been a Hunter, it is presumed that Jed could utilize Nen.

On[]

Jed cannot utilize Nen and instead is powered by his own feelings of malice through On. He can transmit his On to other people through his blood, and use it to either shoot powerful beams or conjure a gigantic Rakshasa.

If someone is injected with Jed's blood, they will die unless they form a contract with On. In Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission, Jed tells Netero that in order to make his own power stronger, he made a condition that the only person his blood would not work on is Netero, the person he came to hate the most.[1]

Jed emits a gigantic and powerful Rakshasa that can stretch his limbs to attack even the furthest of enemies and shoot great beams of On towards them from its mouth and palms. When not using its beams the Rakshasa attacks the opponent with a barrage of hits with open palms multiple times.[1]

Trivia[]

  • Present in Jed's On ability, a Rakshasa (羅刹, Rasetsu, in Japanese), also called "Maneater" and sometimes used interchangeably with Asura, is a demon-like being originally in the Hindu mythology and which was later incorporated into Buddhism.
