The Kurta Pendant (クルタ族のペンダント,[1] Kuruta-zoku no Pendanto) is an anime-only artifact that was exclusively present in the 1999 anime adaptation of Hunter × Hunter.[2]
Appearance[]
The pendant is made of gold, has the form of a salamander with four legs, two wings, and the tail curled at the tip. It also has ten embedded ruby gems, and is very expensive.[2]
Plot[]
Hunter Exam arc[]
During the bonus stage of the Third Phase of the Hunter Exam, Kurapika discovers a legendary pendant in the course of the treasure hunt inside a ship belonging to members of the Kurta Clan when they were trying to escape the Phantom Troupe. The ship was destroyed near the shores of Zevil Island. Kurapika presents the pendant to the couple Banner and Genner during their stay in Zevil Island to inquire about it. However, the couple refuses to accept it and instead gave him a key to a room for free. Later, Kurapika throws it into the sea where he thinks it belongs.[2]
Trivia[]
- In the subtitled version of the anime, its name is specifically "Golden Pendant of the Kurta Clan".[2]
- The pendant acts, allegedly, as an amulet which offers protection to whoever wears it.[2]
Intertextuality and References[]
- The Kurta Pendant's design was based on a real-life jeweled pendant[3] recovered from the underwater wreck site of the Spanish galleass La Girona, which sank off in north County Antrim coast, Northern Ireland, in 1588.[4]
