"No way. I refuse to kill for charity. You come at us. You're still Meteor City natives, aren't you?! Show us there's some spirit left in you!!! Send yourselves off in style!" — Phinks to the transformed Meteor City natives, in "10: Part 7" |
Phinks Magcub (フィンクス゠マグカブ, Finkusu Magukabu) is member #5 of the Phantom Troupe.[2] His physical strength ranked second among the group.[4]
Appearance[]
Phinks has blond hair (dark brown in the 1999 anime adaptation) and black eyes. He is fairly tall and muscular. His most distinguishing features are his piercing eyes and lack of eyebrows.
When he is first introduced, Phinks wears an outfit similar to a modern pharaoh, with a golden, snake-like (Uraeus) headpiece (nemes), white long-sleeved tunic, and a necklace. However, he is most often seen wearing a tracksuit.
His spider tattoo has the number 5 on the spider's abdomen,[2] but the tattoo location has yet to be revealed.
Personality[]
Phinks is short-tempered and rather ruthless. He can be brash and has a tendency to get into conflicts with other people, including his comrades. Phinks seems to get along with Feitan the most and is often seen partnering with him, both in and out of combat. He is very loyal to Chrollo, as shown when he was the first to try to go after Kurapika after Chrollo was captured, despite the objections of other members.
Like the other members of the Troupe, Phinks is also cold-blooded, ruthless, and not above inhumane mass murder, most notably when he brutally massacred the Kurta Clan alongside his teammates, and when he killed multiple innocent Greed Island players for a contest with Feitan.[5] The gruesome murder of their dear friend Sarasa and thirst for revenge against the perpetrators have desensitized him to such atrocities.[6]
While he can be short-tempered, he also has good relationships with his fellow Spiders. He showed himself to be melancholic during and after Pakunoda's death, especially when he sadly informed Gon and Killua about her demise and that she wanted to thank them.[7] He also seemed to develop a bond with the Troupe’s newest member at the time, Kalluto Zoldyck, helping him understand how the Troupe usually works (e.g., splitting up to hide their abilities from others, refusing to help others if a competition is involved). When Shizuku appears with her clothes destroyed, Phinks is surprised and is the first one to comment, asking if she aims for a new look. He later lends his robes to her, showing that he has a gentlemanly side.[8]
In his youth, Phinks was shown to be more aggressive and coercive.[9] However, Sarasa notes that despite his rough attitude, he has a kind heart.[10]
Background[]
Phinks originated from Meteor City, a junkyard city inhabited by outcasts. People who live there do not exist in any official records, and the existence of the city itself is known to a very few people.[11]
One day, about fifteen years prior to his series debut, Phinks and Feitan saw Chrollo running with a videotape and cut him off on a motorcycle. They told him to give it back, hoping for new content, but he outsmarted them and gave them back the cassette found sometime earlier.[11] He later went with Feitan to see a screening of a Power Cleaners episode that Chrollo dubbed and even volunteered to be the Blue Cleaner in future screenings after it was over.[10]
After one of his co-actors, who played the Orange Cleaner, was found dead in a forest, Phinks joined Uvogin and six of his other co-actors in pledging their lifelong loyalty to Chrollo. Unlike the others, he was seemingly absent from the formal founding of the Phantom Troupe three years after.[6]
Although Phinks is not a founding member of the Troupe,[12] Pakunoda shot him and Shalnark with her Memory Bomb ability because she needed to fire six shots at once, the same number of founding members (including herself and Uvogin).[13]
As a founding member of the troupe, he took part in the massacre of the Kurta Clan.[14]
Plot[]
Yorknew City arc[]
On August 31st, Phinks appears with the rest of the Phantom Troupe at an undisclosed location in Yorknew City, where Chrollo reveals his plans to steal all the items at the Underground Auction.[15] On the evening of September 1st, Uvogin, Machi, Feitan, Shalnark, Nobunaga, Shizuku, and Franklin go to the auction and kill all the guests,[16] only to discover that the auction items have already been taken.[17] The Mafia follows them to the Gordeau Desert, where Uvogin is captured by Kurapika after singlehandedly slaughtering a large number of Mafia members[18] and four Shadow Beasts.[19]
Phinks and the Troupe then disguise themselves as Mafia members to rescue Uvogin, with Phinks personally killing Dalzollene of the Nostrade Family.[20] They tell Uvogin that they killed the rest of the Shadow Beasts, obtained the auction items, and have orders from Chrollo to return to the hideout. Uvogin, however, insists on finding Kurapika to seek revenge. Having no other choice, Phinks and the others return to the hideout and wait for Uvogin there.[21] After several hours of waiting, they realize that Uvogin must have been killed by the chain user.[4]
On September 3rd, Chrollo orders Phinks and Pakunoda to tail Machi and Nobunaga to catch anyone going after them. When Machi and Nobunaga arrive in an abandoned area of the city, Phinks and Pakunoda call their comrades and tell them about Gon and Killua, who have been following them.[22] Together, they easily capture the two boys and take them back to their hideout.[23] As the Troupe members argue about the boys and their possible connection to the chain user, Phinks says that the boys may not even know the chain user, also pointing out that the chain user may not usually show his chains. He then suggests not releasing them until they learn who their leader is, with Shalnark quickly adding that the chain user won’t be their leader since he is most likely a loner. He simply shrugs when Shizuku - through sign language - asks for his opinion on Nobunaga's sanity when the samurai heartily laughs at Gon's naivety. When Nobunaga says that he wants to keep Gon and Killua around until Chrollo returns, Phinks and Machi tell him that he has to watch them by himself.[24]
Chrollo then orders the Troupe to go on a massacre around the Cemetery Building in order to avenge Uvogin’s death.[25] Phinks and other members quickly massacre police and more than 2,000 Mafia members.[26][27] After the deaths of the Ten Dons,[28] they use Kortopi’s ability to fake the deaths of several Troupe members[29] and to create copies of the auction items, selling the fakes at the rescheduled auction.[28] Afterwards, Phinks celebrates the triumph with the rest of the Troupe back at their hideout.[29]
On September 4th, Chrollo decides that it's time for the Troupe to leave the city, but Nobunaga insists that they go after the chain user.[30] Knowing that Nobunaga won't stop his vendetta against Kurapika, Chrollo uses his newly-stolen ability to write out fortunes for him and the other Troupe members.[14] In addition to Kortopi,[31] Phinks and Feitan are unable to have their fortunes told because Phinks doesn't know his blood type and Feitan doesn't know his birthday.[32] Hisoka uses his Texture Surprise to alter his fortune, ultimately convincing Chrollo to stay in Yorknew.[33] Later, they discover that the chain user is at the Hotel Beitacle thanks to Kortopi tracking the copied Scarlet Eyes they sold to the Nostrade Family the night before.[34]
Chrollo tells Phinks, Feitan, Shalnark, Hisoka, and Franklin to stay at the hideout while he and the others head to the hotel.[31] In the evening, after they capture Gon and Killua again, Chrollo calls Phinks and tells him to come to the hotel with the others.[35] After Chrollo is captured by the chain user, Nobunaga calls Phinks and tells him to hurry since Chrollo has been taken.[12] When Phinks, Feitan, and Shalnark arrive at the hotel, the Troupe members begin to argue over the failure to protect and chase after Chrollo. Phinks then receives a call from Chrollo's cell phone, which is being used by Kurapika, who orders Phinks not to follow them, not to harm the hostages, and to give the phone to Pakunoda.[36]
Phinks then pretends that Gon and Killua were injured during the encounter, which causes Kurapika to immediately hang up. After Phinks calls back, apologizes, and then gives the phone to Pakunoda, she and Nobunaga punch him as they mind him that Chrollo’s life is at stake. After Pakunoda leaves the hotel alone to meet Kurapika at Lingon Airport according to his orders, Phinks tries to follow her, but Nobunaga stands in his way. Before the two can fight, Shizuku knocks Nobunaga unconscious and reminds them that there’s no in-fighting. After talking with Kurapika again, Phinks finally agrees to return to the hideout..[36]
Once Pakunoda returns from the meeting at the airport, Phinks asks her about the location of the chain user, suggesting that they kill the hostages and go after him.[37] She refuses to listen to him and states that she is leaving alone, taking the two kids with her. Regarding this as an act of betrayal, Phinks and Feitan decide to stop her and prepare to fight Machi and Kortopi, who side with her. Gon suddenly breaks out of his chains and angrily tells Phinks that Pakunoda just wants to save their leader. Phinks is ready to kill Gon if he takes another step, but Franklin speaks up and says that they should let Pakunoda leave with the two boys because the worst-case scenario is the death of the Troupe. He adds that the Spiders rely too much on Chrollo to sacrifice him and proposes that if any of them are being manipulated, they can simply kill them and start over. When Pakunoda and the two boys leave, Franklin asks Phinks why he isn’t going after them, and Phinks replies that they will try to stop him, agreeing to wait and see what happens. He threatens to kill Franklin as well if Chrollo doesn’t return, causing Franklin to give a small smile.[38]
Once Pakunoda returns to the hideout, Phinks demands answers from her and wonders to himself why she's holding her gun. Pakunoda tells them that Chrollo can't come there, and Phinks angrily asks if she's joking, ordering her to explain and threatening her with violence if they don't like her answer. Pakunoda readies her ability and tells herself that she can fire six shots simultaneously for the same number of founding members. She then asks Feitan, Phinks, Machi, Nobunaga, Shalnark, and Franklin if they will trust her and accept it. As Pakunoda prepares to shoot out her memories, Phinks thinks that the chain user is manipulating her, but Nobunaga assures him that it's really Pakunoda. Once Pakunoda fires the six shots along with her memories into their heads, Kurapika's Judgment Chain activates around her heart. She prays that she will be the last as she falls dead to the ground. With the members left stunned, all of Pakunoda's memories suddenly flood into their minds. Shizuku checks on Pakunoda and confirms that she's dead, asking the others how it happened. Phinks says that he will explain everything and begins to tell the others why Pakunoda made her decision.[13]
Greed Island arc[]
On September 6th, Phinks and Feitan attend the Southernpiece Auction and are surprised to see Gon and Killua, who immediately run away. The Troupe members easily chase after them and tell the two that they have no plans to kill them and that they can’t kill Kurapika because it could result in post-mortem Nen. Feitan gives him a look, and Phinks realizes that he shouldn’t reveal anything else, assuring himself that Chrollo is looking for an exorcist and that they just need to wait. Phinks assures Gon and Killua that they are just there to enjoy the auction, adding that the other members have already returned home. Gon asks about Pakunoda, and as Phinks tells him that she died and sees the pained look on his face, he plays through one of Pakunoda's memories when she asked the two boys why they weren't trying to escape from her since she was injured. She told them that if they escaped, the chain user could just kill Chrollo. She asked the two if they were his friends, and Gon sternly replied that it's because they're his friends that they don't want him to be a murderer. After Killua replied that the hostage exchange is the best way to do things, Pakunoda stood in silence as the two boys looked back at her. Back in the present, Phinks tells the boys that Pakunoda was thankful to them, quickly turning around as he and Feitan leave.[7]
By attending the auction, Phinks and Feitan discover that Battera has purchased multiple copies of Greed Island and is selecting players through tryouts. Later on the same day, they attack a car carrying a copy, kill the guards, and take it back to their hideout to play.[39] When Machi, Franklin, Shizuku, and Shalnark ask about the game, Phinks invites them to play before entering the game.[40] After Shalnark, Shizuku, and Kortopi also enter the game and discover that Greed Island may be a place in the real world, they come up with a plan and decide to meet up with Phinks and Feitan afterwards. Phinks and Feitan are seen to have killed Latarza and taken his cards. Phinks suggests that they have a contest to see which of them can kill the most players, and Feitan agrees, reminding Phinks to take their cards first.[5] After the Troupe members meet up, they leave together and then travel by boat to the island in the real world. However, they are promptly detected by Eta.[41] Upon reaching the shore, they encounter Razor, who introduces himself as a Game Master. He informs them that trespassers aren't welcome and that they can come back using the right way. He then uses an "Eliminate" card to send them to six different locations on the Azian Continent.[42]
After Phinks and the others return the right way and realize that Chrollo headed to the real Greed Island according to his fortune, Shalnark tells them that he must have hired someone to play the game for him and then use his name as a message to them. As he adds that the exorcist must be on the island, Hisoka reveals himself and that it was his idea to use Chrollo's name. Phinks tells Hisoka that he would like to kill him now, but says that he will leave it to Chrollo.[43] Even though they don't possess many cards, Phinks and Feitan's hostile playing style has even the Bombers concerned.[44] Finally locating the exorcist Abengane with the help of their new member Kalluto, the Troupe has Hisoka make a deal with him so that he will remove Kurapika's Judgment Chain from Chrollo's heart. Phinks tells Hisoka to get the job done and stresses that they will pay whatever the exorcist asks.[45]
Chimera Ant arc[]
During the Chimera Ant crisis, Phinks, Feitan, Bonolenov, Shalnark, Kalluto, and Shizuku all journey to Meteor City. On their way there, they discuss how the Chimera Ant invasion happened and why some of them came to the city. The Troupe is met by some locals who tell them about the self-proclaimed Queen making a nest near the city and wreaking havoc amongst the people and how the assembly is currently dealing with it. Seeing that no immediate progress is being made, the Troupe takes it upon themselves to solve the Chimera Ant problem. Phinks assures the officials that they will exterminate the Queen by the end of the day. The Troupe members approach the enormous nest and walk right in through the front door.[46]
With Kalluto surprised that they are going their separate ways, Phinks points out that he probably has abilities that he doesn't want the others to see. He also tells him that whoever kills the Queen first will become the acting leader. Phinks soon encounters a Gorilla Chimera Ant, who tells Phinks that his punch is weaker than a mosquito bite. Gorilla then allows Phinks to get another attack off, and as Phinks decides to throw another punch, he begins to wind up his arm and says that around 15 should do it, leaving Gorilla confused.[47]
As Phinks rotates his arm and his aura spikes around him, Gorilla’s confusion quickly turns to fear. Phinks reminds him that he allowed him one free punch, and as Gorilla begins to panic, Phinks unleashes the attack and rips the Ant’s body to shreds. Phinks notes that his Ripper Cyclotron ability allows him to increase his punching power with each arm rotation. He says that he still isn’t good at calculating the right number, guessing that half as many spins would have been enough. Phinks then sees two paths before him and lets a coin toss choose.[48]
Phinks is then seen watching Feitan’s fight against Zazan, saying that Feitan is fighting better while Bonolenov adds that he still isn’t at the top of his game. When Shizuku arrives with her clothing torn apart, Phinks jokingly wonders if she got a makeover and asks if she lost, with Shizuku quickly replying that she won. After Zazan transforms and hits Feitan with some of her aura, Phinks explains to Kalluto how it happened. Kalluto wonders why they aren’t helping Feitan, and Phinks reminds him that it’s a race, adding that someone else can try if Feitan fails. Phinks and Bonolenov then argue about who arrived first, but Shalnark tells them to settle it with a coin toss.[49]
Bonolenov wins the coin toss and says that he gets to fight Zazan next if Feitan is killed, leaving Phinks disappointed. The Troupe members continue to watch the fight until the transformed Zazan breaks Feitan's left arm. Phinks then jokingly asks Feitan if he wants to switch places with Bonolenov, but after realizing that Feitan is preparing to use his ability, they all start to run away. As Kalluto is left confused, the others explain how dangerous Feitan's ability is, with Phinks telling him that Feitan’s ability has a wide range and is activated by anger. He guesses that this version would kill Kalluto instantly, and Kalluto is left intrigued that there are different kinds. After Feitan kills Zazan with his ability, the Troupe members encounter the transformed Meteor City residents, who all beg to be killed. However, Phinks refuses to do so and orders them to show what spirit they still have left as Meteor City natives. The other members ready their weapons, and Phinks begins to rotate his arm before leaping toward one of the Ants. After the Troupe members easily take care of the transformed residents and return to the city, the members decide to stay and take care of any more Ants that appear, but Shalnark receives a text from Nobunaga asking for help. Phinks is left disappointed that it wasn't Chrollo contacting them and says that he hates having to wait. Shalnark and Feitan jokingly tell Phinks that he’s acting like a girl with a crush, and Phinks angrily tosses rubble at the two injured Troupe members as they run away from him.[8]
Succession Contest arc[]

On the second day of the Black Whale’s voyage, Phinks, Feitan, Franklin, and Nobunaga are seen aboard the ship confronting three members of the Buor Family in Tier 5. They force them to talk about Kakin's three Mafia families, with Phinks guessing that there's a middleman between the boss and the henchmen. Franklin tells the Buor Family members to call over the person who takes the cut, and one of them replies that the next meeting is planned for Saturday. Phinks then tells the Mafia members that their new mission is to find everyone taller than 6'2" and get their room numbers.[50]
On the fourth day of the voyage, the Troupe gathers together in the crowded central dining hall and discusses the situation regarding Hisoka. When the Cha-R Family claims the table for themselves, the Troupe leaves without a fight. Chrollo states that they will meet again at that table and orders them to bring him Hisoka's head, with the Troupe members going their separate ways.[2]
Nobunaga tells Phinks and Feitan that they will leave Tier 5 to the Buor Family and search for Hisoka on Tier 4. He plans to retrieve his weapon from the warehouse, and Phinks says that he needs to get something as well, with Feitan adding that his trick umbrella was smuggled in with the black market goods. Nobunaga wonders if the two are babysitting him, but Phinks and Feitan stress that they don't want to give Hisoka any chance to kill them. After arriving at the warehouse, the three encounter some henchmen of the Cha-R Family, one of whom leads them inside. As the man turns the corner, Nobunaga stops Phinks and Feitan, stating that he suddenly vanished from his En, with Phinks noting that he can no longer feel his presence. They walk down the corridor, which turns out to be a dead end, and then hear a thud from behind them. They find the man lying dead on the floor with his throat cut open. Phinks and Feitan nonchalantly keep searching for the items on their own, ridiculing Nobunaga's concern and telling him that his priorities are weird. As the three continue to talk, the hit man Luini watches them from his portal in the ceiling and describes them as his idols, hoping that they can destroy the world together.[51]
After retrieving their weapons, the three return to the entrance and find that the other Mafia members are gone, but Phinks points out that one got away, noting a trail of dry blood and worrying that it's a trap. He then remarks that if someone had wanted to frame them as enemies of the Cha-R Family, the first corpse would have been enough. When Nobunaga replies that the murders may be unrelated to them, Phinks asks him if he believes multiple parties are involved. From Nobunaga's answer, he surmises that the culprit ran into them by chance and decided to use them, but switched back to his original plan when a fight didn't break out. They begin to follow the trail and surmise that Hisoka isn't involved, guessing that the culprit's target is the Cha-R Family. The trail ends at a locked door, and Phinks notices the two security cameras nearby, which he finds odd for Tier 5. After Nobunaga tries to open the door and finds that it's locked, the Cha-R underboss Ken'i Wang appears behind them with four armed subordinates. He asks if they are the ones who attacked the warehouse guards, but after the Troupe members say that they weren't involved, Ken'i receives a call from his subordinates about a man who entered their hideout with a wounded warehouse guard and yelled that the Spiders did it. Ken'i is annoyed that someone tried to manipulate the two groups into fighting and guesses that he was a hitman from one of the other families. Phinks speculates that they did so to fulfill an ability condition in order to teleport into their hideout at a later time, explaining the process in great detail and even mentioning Nen by name. While Ken'i asks the three Troupe members if they want to work together, he tells himself that they are dangerous and must be eliminated.[52]
Inside the Cha-R's hideout, after Ken'i and the Troupe members watch the surveillance footage, Nobunaga points out that the hit man will come to open the other door. Ken'i asks if they want to see what's inside, and Nobunaga refuses to do so for free, offering to kill the hit man. After Ken'i agrees, he introduces the Spiders to the other Cha-R members present. After telling them that the Cha-R has around 250 members on board, the supervisor Tsudonke recognizes the Spiders and keeps it to himself, wondering if he should ask them for an autograph.[53]
On the seventh day of the voyage, Tajao, the assistant to the Cha-R boss, emerges from the locked room in the hideout, escorted by Ken'i. Phinks objects to the way Ken'i introduces them, making it sound like the Spiders are the ones who requested cooperation. After Ken'i gives Tajao his report, Phinks explains that they are looking for Hisoka, who was nowhere to be found in Tier 5. He says that the Troupe members will kill the hit man if they get permission from the Xi-Yu Family to allow them to search Tier 4. He is confident that the hit man will eventually return to access the passage leading to the upper tiers, perhaps in order to kill their boss. Tajao warns the three Spiders that an inescapable war might occur depending on where Morena is. He informs them of the rules that the families must follow, exasperating Phinks and Nobunaga. The two surmise that the most convenient course of action would be to kill Morena. Phinks urges Ken'i and Tajao to find her and assures them that the Spiders will come together to hunt down the hit man.[54]
On the tenth day of the voyage, after Onior confirms with Hinrigh that Hisoka isn't in Tier 4, he says that he can give the Spiders permission to search that tier.[55]
Abilities & Powers[]
Due to Phinks being born in Meteor City, his existence is not recorded in any database, which makes obtaining information on him nearly impossible.[30] Phinks' great strength, speed, and hand-to-hand combat skills make him a very powerful fighter and member of the Troupe. He was able to kill several armed Mafia members in mere seconds,[26] and easily thwarted Killua's escape attempt.[22] The full extent of his abilities, however, has yet to be shown. Among the Spiders, Phinks was the second strongest in arm-wrestling prior to Uvogin's death.[4]
Preternatural Perception: As a Nen user, Phinks is capable of perceiving others' aura. He sensed the disappearance of the Mafia member who led him through the warehouse,[51] and was the first to detect Ken'i and his henchmen.[52]
Immense Strength: Being an Enhancer and ranked second in arm-wrestling among the Troupe, Phinks is incredibly strong.[4] He killed Dalzollene by piercing him with his hand,[20] and was able to restrain Killua’s legs, although the latter managed to break free from his grip with enough force.[22]
Immense Speed and Reflexes: Phinks managed to keep track of Killua, grab him by the ankle, dodge rocks thrown at him at very short range, and intercept his kick, which the boy was sure would have connected.[22] He killed multiple armed Mafia members by twisting their necks before they had a chance to see him move,[26] and later caught up to Gon and Killua despite starting seated and the two boys having a head start.[7]
Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Phinks' fighting style appears to be centered on snapping or twisting an opponent's neck quickly and silently.[26][38] He is so proficient at it that he employs it as his primary means of offense.[26] His brief clash against Killua showed his ability to effortlessly match the assassin in close-quarters combat, easily blocking his kicks and grabbing him so firmly that he tore off the skin from his ankles to escape.[22]
Expert in Tailing: Utilizing Zetsu, Phinks was able to pursue Gon and Killua, both fairly skilled in tailing, completely unspotted. Nobunaga and Machi were able to detect his presence, but not his location or the exact number of pursuers.[22]
Nen[]
Phinks is an Enhancer*.[1][3] Like the rest of the Troupe, he is well-versed in the field of Nen. He is capable of using at least four Nen techniques: Zetsu, Ren, Ko,[47] and Hatsu.[48] Since Ko is a combination of Ten, Ren, Zetsu, and Gyo (hence Ryu as well), he should be capable of using those techniques as well. He also appears to have some degree of theoretical knowledge about Nen, as he knew that all teleportation abilities must satisfy a requirement called "marking".[52] He is unskilled in En, he's not good at picking up strategic clues with it. Furthermore, his En easily breaks down when he's distracted by someone talking or moving, moreover, he can't use it while moving. The best he can do with En is to scope smaller areas, like a storehouse.[56]
Phinks's Nen Type: Enhancement | ||
---|---|---|
Type: Enhancement | Ripper Cyclotron (廻天 Rippā Saikurotoron, lit. "Spinning in the Sky") | |
When Phinks winds his arm in a clockwise direction, his aura increases in his fist with every rotation. The power generated by 15 rotations of his right arm was more than enough for him to destroy a Chimera Ant's resilient body with a single punch. However, he estimated that half as many would have been enough, stating that he has trouble calibrating his punches.[48] |

Trivia[]
- In the official databook, his name is also spelled as "Phynkss".[1]
- Due to his Egyptian theme, it is possible his name is a corruption of "sphinx", a mythical animal that is commonly associated with Egypt.
- When Chrollo used Neon's ability to predict the Troupe members' fortunes, Phinks was one of three members whose fortune could not be told due to lack of information, since he doesn't know his blood type.[32]
- His Nen ability is translated as '"Kaiten"--Ripper Cyclotron' in the Viz version;[48] kaiten being the rōmaji of 廻天 (the base kanji of the ability's original Japanese name).
- In Crunchyroll’s translation of the 2011 anime adaptation, his Nen ability is translated as "Karmic Loop Ripper Cyclotron".[59]
Anime and Manga Differences[]
- In the 2011 anime adaptation, the color of Phinks' tracksuit resembles the iconic Gucci clothing color scheme.
- In the manga, Phinks is shown holding a cigarette outside Meteor City,[46] hinting that he's a smoker. This cigarette is omitted in the 2011 anime adaptation.[59]
Intertextuality and References[]
- Phinks' Nen ability, Ripper Cyclotron, is partly an allusion to atomic physics: cyclotron—a type of particle accelerator—accelerates charged subatomic particles (generated at a central source) outwards from the center along a spiral path; the particles are held to a trajectory by a static magnetic field. The "ripper" in the title could possibly refer to "ripples", in relation to the rotations or undulations from Phinks' arm.
- His ability may have been derived from Jin's technique called "Tornado Fist" from Yoshihiro Togashi's other series, YuYu Hakusho.
- It is also first shown in the Phantom Rouge movie, well before its initial appearance in the canon timeline of the manga.
- Phinks bears a slight physical resemblance to Kuwabara from YuYu Hakusho.
- Phinks also shares some personality traits with Toguro, with both noting how they could kill their opponents using less power with their respective abilities.
Miscellaneous[]
- In the 1999 anime adaptation, his Japanese voice actor also voices Matthew and Hanzo; in the English dub of the same adaptation, his voice actor also voices Hanzo.
- In the 2011 anime adaptation, his English voice actor also voices Assam, Zetsk Bellam, and Rabid Dog.
- Phinks is played by Satou Takuyuki in the stage play, Hunter × Hunter: Real Stage.
- In the third character popularity poll, Phinks placed 14th with 261 votes.
