The Royal Palace of East Gorteau is a large estate located in the former Republic of East Gorteau just outside of the capital city of Peijin. It was the residence of Ming Jol-ik.[1][2]

Appearance[]

Chap 251 - Royal Palace floor plan

The Royal Palace floor plan

The palace is enclosed within tall, stone walls and surrounded by a wide courtyard. Located on the grounds are ten large trees with 500 cocoons each. There is a central stairway that leads to the throne room on the third floor.[3]

Locations[]

  • Area D: The area is a private, underground hangar belonging to the Secretary of State Bizeff. It has the appearance of a modernized, small-town setting. Bizeff orders five prostitutes to live there and obey his amorous whims. Unbeknownst to him, one of the prostitutes was a spy associated with the Extermination Team whose sole goal was to see the King and Royal Guards in order to activate her Nen ability.[4]

Plot[]

Chimera Ant arc[]

92 - palace

Meruem and the Royal Guards flying toward the palace

After leaving the nest, Meruem and the Royal Guards make their way to the palace in East Gorteau, with the King easily slaughtering all the soldiers outside. As Ming Jol-ik tells the remaining soldiers not to bother him about the intruders, a soldier capable of using Nen confronts the four Chimera Ants.[1] After killing and eating him, Meruem then slaughters Ming Jol-ik and decides that the palace is large enough for their human processing plant.[5] Meruem is next seen sitting in the throne room of the palace, with nine days left until the sorting.[6]

Neferpitou is seen sensing someone interfering with the sorting[7] by disabling their puppets. They become annoyed, but Shaiapouf assures them that it's simply a diversion. After receiving Nen abilities, Leol, Flutter, and Hina volunteer to deal with the lone assassin.[8] Pitou calls Leol and gives them the whereabouts of the assassin so that they can prepare an ambush. Leol then meets up with Cheetu and tells him that Pouf will prepare a new ability for him and teach him how to master it once he reaches the palace.[9] Meruem then defeats and kills the East Gorteau Shogi Champion before challenging the East Gorteau Go Champion.[2] After he allows the Go champion to take a break, Meruem learns about Gungi from Pouf and begins his matches against the current champion: Komugi. He then learns from Youpi that the Go player hanged himself.[10]

105 - Knov's disguise

Knov sneaking toward the palace

As Pitou sends out Welfin and Bloster to help Leol deal with Knov, Meruem continues his Gungi matches against Komugi.[11] Welfin and Bloster marvel at the 5,000 cocoons as they leave the palace, with Meruem preparing to disrupt Komugi's rhythm.[12] However, he continues to lose against her and takes a break, stressing that there won't be any more afterwards.[13] After losing to Morel, Cheetu tells him that he will get another ability from Pouf as he heads back to the palace. Meruem resumes his matches against Komugi[14] and underestimates her willpower, ripping off his own arm as an apology and eventually agreeing to let Pitou heal it while they continue to play. With Pitou's puppets and En gone, Morel and Knov realize that it may be their only chance to break in so that the latter can set the entrances and exits with his ability.[15] As Pitou uses Doctor Blythe to heal Meruem's arm, Pouf offers to use his En in the meantime. Knov sneaks toward the palace and determines the entrances and exits he will set so that the Extermination Team can successfully invade.[16]

Bizeff is shown working inside, and it's stated that he was the only human allowed to stay by the King's side given his ability to maintain the country's facade. It's added that the Royal Guards decided to have no human guards since they would be useless against Nen and would create opportunities for enemy infiltration. At the time of Knov's reconnaissance, three humans (besides those kept for food) and eleven Ants inhabited the palace. As Bizeff looks through pictures of various women on his laptop and chooses five of them, Palm works with Marcos as she prepares to infiltrate the palace.[16]

106 - Knov

Knov reaching the central staircase

Knov eventually sets the exits and kills Taragetter before glimpsing Pouf's En and setting the last exit by the central staircase.[3] As Marcos arrives with Bizeff's women, Knov escapes the palace and has a mental breakdown, saying that he can't go back and hoping that Palm doesn't get caught. Bizeff drives the five women to the southeast underground hangar in Area D and tells them that they only need to obey his orders. Palm tells herself that she needs to look upon the King and Royal Guards, willing to kill herself if she gets caught.[4] Palm eventually sleeps with Bizeff and uses the elevator to make her way up to the palace.[17]

As Gon wonders about Palm, Shoot tells the group that she could be in the underground hangar beyond the range of Pitou's En. Morel tells them that Knov was able to set the exits and that they have three days left until the invasion. Inside the palace, after Komugi wins once again, Meruem allows her to take a break after seeing that she's fatigued,[18] with Pouf restraining himself from killing her after Meruem leaves the room. Elsewhere, the Extermination Team discusses their invasion of the palace in detail. Inside the palace, Meruem leaves the details for the sorting to Pouf as he continues playing Gungi with Komugi. Pitou continues to monitor Morel and his smoke puppets in Peijin, eager to fight him but unable to leave their post. The Extermination Team continue to discuss the invasion, but with only one day remaining, Killua tells himself that something isn't right.[19]

109 - Knov

Knov seeing the hypnotized crowd

Still unable to defeat Komugi, Meruem realizes that he doesn't know his own name as he confronts the Royal Guards about it.[20] Although he appears to waver at first, he revels in his extraordinary power and prepares to kill Komugi. However, he finds an eagle attacking her and kills it to protect her, wondering what he wants to do with her. As Gon, Killua, and Ikalgo discuss the situation within the palace, they come to the conclusion that Pitou used their healing ability on the King, who harmed himself. In Peijin, Morel gazes toward the palace and worries that something will go wrong.[21] The military begins the forced march toward the palace, and the Royal Guards discuss a possible infiltration during the sorting. As the team discusses the invasion, Knov watches the palace from afar and notices Pouf using his scales on the gathering crowd,[22] realizing that it has a hypnotic effect that will keep them obedient during the sorting. Inside Knov's mansion, the team members discuss and think about the invasion. As Meruem questions his existence, the team members look toward the palace in the distance and prepare to strike in ten minutes.[23]

The team members decide to invade the palace from the exit near the central staircase. Inside, Hina complains to Shidore about how much her exorcism ability is affecting her appearance. Welfin offers to help a desperate Bizeff look for Palm, but he soon finds dirty shoes and Taragetter's blood, following the intruder's tracks further into the palace. As Komugi longs to play Gungi with him, Meruem laughs at his situation and strikes Youpi when he tries to follow him. After complaining about Pitou's En, Meruem tells them to only use it up to the first floor and to forbid anyone from coming up to the second.[24] As the team members discuss Palm and the situation inside the palace, Welfin continues to look for the intruder and analyzes the situation in detail after talking to Youpi. With less than one minute until the team's invasion, it's stated that two minutes earlier two men jumped from an enormous creature flying high above East Gorteau.[25]

111 - Dragons above the palace

Pitou witnessing Zeno's Dragon Dive

When Pitou senses the incoming threat, they direct their En up toward the sky. Pitou and Pouf spot the enormous dragon, which Netero and Zeno are seen riding. As Pitou turns off their En to prepare for battle and the dragon breaks apart into a multitude of arrows, the clock strikes midnight and the team sprints toward the exit.[26] Pouf flies desperately toward the throne room, and Netero uses his 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva to send Pitou flying away from the palace, with the Extermination Team making their entrance.[27] As Pitou uses Doctor Blythe to stay near the palace and watches the rain of dragons strike the palace, Youpi prepares to confront the intruders.[28]

As Pouf reaches the empty throne room, Knuckle makes use of Meleoron's God's Accomplice and punches Youpi,[29] activating A.P.R. on him. Pitou then directs their En toward the palace, causing the Hunters to hesitate and allowing Youpi to destroy the central staircase. After spotting Meruem, Komugi, Netero, and Zeno, Pitou leaps toward Meruem who is seen holding a wounded Komugi in his arms.[30] Meruem asks Pitou to heal Komugi and tells Netero and Zeno that the three of them should go somewhere else. As the transformed Youpi guards the top of the destroyed staircase, Morel uses his ability to distract him so that Knuckle can land another punch.[31] Shoot then confronts Youpi and recovers Morel's pipe so that the latter can head toward Pouf in the throne room. As Killua kills two soldier Ants with his yo-yos to protect Ikalgo, Gon sees the throne room surrounded with smoke.[32] Inside, Pouf laments his status as a Royal Guard, with Morel trapping him inside his Smoky Jail. Gon sees Netero and Zeno following Meruem on a nearby rooftop, with the Chairman pointing back toward Pitou's location.[33]

116 - Neferpitou asks for more time

Gon confronting Pitou

As Zeno uses Dragon Head to transport Netero and Meruem away from the palace, Shoot continues to fight Youpi, with each trying to keep the other away from Meruem. After Ikalgo (disguised as Flutter) accidentally uses Leol's old name, Welfin and Bloster realize that something is wrong.[34] Knuckle then reveals himself to Youpi in order to save Shoot’s life.[35] Inside the throne room, Pouf analyzes Morel and then wraps himself in order to be reborn. As Ikalgo heads to the basement to look for Palm, Gon and Killua find Pitou using Doctor Blythe to heal Komugi.[36] After Gon becomes enraged when Pitou begs him to let them heal Komugi, Killua reminds him that they need Pitou in order to heal Kite, with Gon giving Pitou one hour.[37][38] Meleoron briefly encounters Welfin and then meets up with Killua.[39] Knuckle eventually decide to fight Youpi after he passed by the wounded Shoot.[40]

With Morel left unsure by Pouf's plot, an enraged Youpi attacks Knuckle[40] and destroys the base of the central tower in the process, revealing to Knuckle that too much anger causes the Royal Guard to unleash an explosion. Outside the palace, Cheetu confronts Zeno but is quickly killed by Silva, with the two Zoldycks riding off on a dragon.[41] As Pouf slowly escapes Morel's Smoky Jail, Ikalgo continues his search for Palm and as he worries that she may be dead, he is attacked by Bloster and Flutter's corpse is destroyed.[42] Youpi uses his fake rage against Knuckle, drawing the Hunter in and leaving him defenseless as he prepares to kill him with a single punch. But high above in the sky, making use of God's Accomplice, Killua unleashes Thunderbolt on Youpi, immobilizing the Royal Guard as Knuckle punches him hard in the face.[43]

Killua Godspeed EP119 IMG2

Killua activating Godspeed

After Knuckle finishes attacking Youpi and runs away, Killua uses his Godspeed to overwhelm the Royal Guard, but runs out of electricity and escapes with Meleoron's God's Accomplice.[44] In the palace's basement, Ikalgo struggles to kill Bloster,[45] eventually knocking him unconscious with sleeping gas but unable to pull the trigger. Morel finally destroys Pouf's cocoon and deactivates Smoky Jail,[46] with Pouf splitting into hundreds of clones and thanking the Hunter for setting him free. After Pouf steals his pipe and flies away, he encounters Youpi and Knuckle, with the two Hunters using their smoke clone strategy to fight the Royal Guard.[47] As Hina and Shidore rescue Bizeff from the fallen rubble, Morel and Knuckle trick Youpi twice, allowing Knuckle to land a punch on the Royal Guard just before he explodes.[48]

With Shoot saved by Knov, Killua tells Meleoron to assess the situation with Morel and Knuckle, adding that he will go back to Gon. After finding Gon and Pitou,[49] Pouf attempts to find out Meruem's location. Youpi harnesses his rage and transforms into a centaur-like creature, destroying Morel's smoke clones as the interest from A.P.R. continues to increase.[50] After learning Meruem's location, Pouf plays along with Gon's orders and secretly sends most of himself to assist the King. Morel reaches his limit,[51] but is saved by Meleoron when Youpi tries to kill him. Knuckle reveals himself and deactivates A.P.R. in exchange for Youpi letting Morel and Meleoron live.[52] After a bald Knov arrives and takes Morel to safety, Knuckle and Meleoron team up to take on the other Royal Guards. Youpi and Pouf find one another and make their way toward Meruem.[53]

127 - Gon threatens Pitou

Gon threatening to kill Komugi

Having been turned into a Chimera Ant, Palm confronts and fights Killua,[54] who eventually breaks down sobbing and tells Palm that only she can help Gon now. Palm ignores Pouf's commands and assures Killua that he is the one Gon needs. Elsewhere, Knuckle confronts Pouf and asks him to fight,[55] and the Royal Guard disobeys Gon and flies away after bursting into hundreds of clones. Pitou panics and Gon tells them that they have ten fewer minutes to heal Komugi. Pitou realizes how dangerous Gon is and resolves to kill him to protect Meruem. In the palace's basement, Welfin confronts and attacks Ikalgo,[56] who fights against the centipedes from Welfin's Missileman and eventually learns that Palm may still be alive.[57] Knuckle sees Pouf's face show the true nature of the Ants as the Royal Guard's segment races toward Meruem.[58] Ikalgo, Killua, Palm, Knuckle, and Meleoron meet up and decide to fight until the end. Pitou finishes healing Komugi, and after Gon threatens to kill the girl, he and Pitou make their way to Peijin to heal Kite, with Komugi left behind as a hostage.[59]

As Meruem, Youpi, and Pouf prepare to head back to the palace to hopefully awaken the King's memory, Pouf seizes his chance and has his shell fly back to kill Komugi before Meruem can reunite with her. After Knuckle activates his A.P.R. and Palm uses her Wink Blue, the others learn that the King is still alive.[60] As Pouf uses his clones to look for Komugi, Killua holds her on his shoulders[61] and eventually realizes that the Royal Guard is trying to kill her. After Killua fights him back, Pouf leaves to hide the Gungi board and pieces so that they don't trigger Meruem's memory.[62] He then works with Welfin and mimics Komugi's voice so that Pitou believes she is safe.[63] After destroying one of Pouf's clones, Killua leaves Komugi with Palm and races toward Gon.[64]

132 - Meruem's En

Meruem using his En across the palace

Still trying to regain his memory, Meruem unleashes his En to search the palace and then incapacitates both Knuckle and Meleoron.[65] While Palm and Ikalgo hide Komugi underneath the palace, Welfin acts as a messenger and confronts Youpi.[66] As his nose begins to bleed, Meruem spots a lone Gungi piece and remembers his game with someone. Pouf finds Youpi lying dead and informs Meruem, who orders Pouf to tell him everything.[67]

Affected by the Poor Man's Rose's poison, Pouf begins coughing up blood,[68] and Meruem decides to continue their game, once again using his En and then confronting Welfin among the hypnotized crowd. As Meruem's bloodlust grows,[69] Welfin desperately searches his mind for the answer and finally says Komugi's name aloud, causing the King to remember playing Gungi with her. Meruem spares Pouf and asks Welfin where the other intruders are.[70] In Area D, Meruem uses his refined En to locate Palm, assuring her that their side has won and that all he desires is to spend his remaining time with Komugi. After Palm agrees to tell him under the condition that she can watch the two with her ability, Meruem locates the sleeping Komugi and wakes her up so that the two can play again. Outside, Pouf is seen lying dead among the hypnotized crowd.[71]

135 - Airships

Hunter Association airships arriving at the palace

Hunter Association airships descend upon the destroyed palace, and as news reports discuss the situation in East Gorteau, the real Ming Jol-ik enjoys a simple life elsewhere.[72] Meruem and Komugi spend their time playing Gungi, and the King reveals that he has been poisoned. Even after being told that it's contagious, Komugi is happy to stay by his side.[73] The two continue playing until their deaths, with Meruem never winning against her.[74]

13th Hunter Chairman Election arc[]

In Area D, Meruem and Komugi are shown with their hands still together, with two Gungi pieces beside them.[75]

Inhabitants[]

Before the Extermination Team's invasion, the Royal Palace had 14 inhabitants:[24]
