Skateboard × Apprentice × Honesty (スケボー×見習い×本当の気持ち, Sukebō × Minarai × Hontō no Kimochi) is the 34th episode of the original Hunter × Hunter anime. It first aired on July 15th, 2000.
Overview[]
The group meets a butler's apprentice, Canary, who refuses to let them pass. Repeatedly, she sends Gon flying with her mace when he tries to get by her. She has Killua's skateboard, meaning they're friends, so Gon says she should let Killua's other friends pass. She lets them pass, but is immediately hit by an unknown projectile.
Synopsis[]
Canary recalls the time she first met Killua; he tried to give her a small skull, but she was unable to accept his gift because she wasn't allowed to be his friend. Currently, Canary sits in the grass, staring dejectedly at Killua's skateboard, leaning against a nearby tree. She hears the sound of people approaching and gets up.

Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio stop as they approach her on their way up the path to the Zoldyck manor. Gon introduces himself and his two friends as friends of Killua's, but Canary insists they leave, refusing to introduce herself in return. Gon tries to argue with her, but she draws a line in the dirt in front of her with her cane, threatening to remove the boys by force if they cross it.
Gon walks forward, determined, and crosses Canary's line. She immediately hits him with her cane and sends him flying backward. Leorio, angry on Gon's behalf, rushes forward toward Canary, and she hits him as well. She walks away, leaving the boys with a warning.
An injured Gon and Leorio splash their wounds with water at a nearby river as Kurapika watches over them. Gon tells the other two about the story Seaquant told him previously about Canary and how Gon believes that Canary was going easy on them just now. Leorio suggests that they take an easier route over a fence instead, but Kurapika advises against it because it is likely a trap. The boys collectively decide to return to Canary and try talking to her again.

As they approach the area with Canary, Gon spots Killua's skateboard, worried about why he would have discarded it like that. When they're face-to-face with Canary again, Gon approaches Canary's line and asks about Killua's skateboard. She claims he gave it to her, but the boys aren't convinced since Killua rarely went anywhere without it during the Hunter Exam; they worry that perhaps he was forced to leave it there and may be in danger. Gon crosses Canary's line again, and she attacks the boys, but they know she is still holding back for some reason. Kalluto watches this scene from the bushes.

Gon insists on handling the situation himself and approaches Canary again. He continuously passes her line, and she repeatedly retaliates by striking him hard enough to send him flying backward. His friends briefly try to intervene, but they quickly understand that this is part of Gon's plan and let him continue. The process continues until the sun sets, and Gon can barely stand. She begs him to stop when he tries his best to approach Canary again. When he doesn't, she strikes him again. Gon struggles to walk, but approaches Canary anyways. He can get through to her a little this time by talking to her enough that she tells him her name. Gon tries to convince her to let them through, but she still refuses, although she now seems quite upset that she isn't allowed to let them through.

Gon says that Canary is probably a friend of Killua's, and that's why she's been going easy on them. She insists she isn't and tells them that Killua didn't give her his skateboard, but instead, he just dropped it there on his way to the house. She argues with Gon that she could never be Killua's friend because of her status, but Gon says her status shouldn't matter when it comes to being friends. In a flashback, Killua insists that Canary not call him "Master," but she feels she can't just call him by his name. In the present, the skull Killua tried to give her can be seen inside her cane's head.
Gon tries again to cross the line; this time, Canary doesn't strike him. Gon says he can tell that Canary is a friend of Killua's, and Canary begs Gon to help Killua. As she does this, she is struck down by something from afar.
